Parents of several blind children that use the library want something local to supplement the state library's offerings. They want their blind children to browse, borrow, and read just as their other family members do. The chapter agreed and raised the funds. We'll raise more until all the commercially available braille books for children are in the collection. What are other local chapters of N.F.B/A.C.B doing? Our chapter is always looking for viable and productive activities. Soon Louisiana federationists and others are gathering in New Orleans to plan the upcoming national convention. Next July, the food, the fun, and the fellowship will be great. We hope to top the three thousand mark. Everybody is welcome. This just happened to be the particular job open at the HH> time. But it showed up a more underlying discrimination that blind HH> people for whatever job cannot be hired on the basis of an interview HH> while sighted people can. WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! Harvey, that is a leap in logic like I've seldomly seen before, and although you keep insisting in each and every message it is your audience who is ignorant, the facts are, your obvious bitterness towards your blindness is causing you to make conclusions few if any others would make! Just as several have pointed out to you, not hiring your friend for the available position of forklift operator upon discovering he was legally blind isn't in itself discriminatory, and NO sane person would even think so! Your leap to this meaning blind people couldn't be hired based upon an interview while sighted people could, well, if there is a single individual reading this who finds that a logical conclusion other than you, I want to hear them speak up! You keep acting as if Henry, Anne and I are uniquely interpreting your words since we are the ones primarily expressing our disagreement, and you keep insisting you didn't say things that, if not in the exact words, you at least inferred in countless messages, but no matter how many times I tell you, you're not going to believe that MOST are reading your words the same as us, are you? Heck, just prior to this I read a message from you to me where you deny ever telling me I couldn't speak out about the NFB, but that is EXACTLY what you said and if I were in the mood or thought it would get me anywhere I would indeed quote your words back to you to prove it! HH> Henry and Willie do not have good understanding of the job market and HH> even if they do, broadcasting is different than most job situations and HH> they have no right to make judgement calls upon what they don't know HH> about. Harvey, for the tenth time, I never questioned your ability as a broadcaster, and I'm getting awfully tired of your saying I did just because I agreed with some of what Henry told you! Actually, there's more than a few things I disagree with Henry on, but that's beside the point. I of course have no idea how good of a broadcaster you were, but I do understand the printed word quite well, and you have indeed blamed most if not all of your employment failings on the mere fact you are blind and the resulting descrimination! You have also proclaimed yourself to have been an excellent broadcaster, as if doing so proves the fact, so likewise accept my following response to your assertion I know little about employment process! Harvey, one of my best friends is the head of the personnel department at H.J. Heinz, you know, the ketchup people. I myself took several courses in college related to the subject, including Industrial, Business and Personnel psych, and yes, I have had many, many jobs in my 45 years of existance! Each and every one of these has confirmed the fact that it is you Harvey who understands very little about employment process, and the fact you think you can repeat the same, illfounded conclusions time and time as if they will mysteriously become fact amazes me! If you truly want to learn how companies hire people, why not only testing but tests that have been shown to demonstrate they measure true liklihood of success on the job are typically used, why the final step is indeed the interview, and why it is highly likely that these same steps are used in the hiring of even disabled workers, well, I'm willing to share this knowledge with you! If, however, you're going to keep insisting it is your audience who is ignorant, well, I guess you're just going to have to remain in the dark forever! Willie ... There are some jobs that a blind person simply can not do. A fork-lift operator is the prime example. Let's be realistic, folks! Would you want to work in a warehouse with a blind fork-lift operator? I wouldn't! And that goes for a partially sighted one, too. I wouldn't trust blind driver anymore than I would trust a blind brain surgeon. As far as the GUI's go, I hope, too that the adaptive technology to give blind people access to such programs is developed, and soon. Maybe some blind programmers could work with some of the software developers to make such products accessible. I may be wrong, but I *believe* that supposedly Microsoft consulted with speech software experts while developing Windows95 so it'd work for speech users. It sounds like you have a very balanced attitude yourself. I agree; the NFB's premise of equality for the blind is fine, but their militancy and their high-handedness has to go. As far as the guide dog schools go, I have to think exactly what I was referring to, in the other message of mine you responded to. Nope. I'm drawing a blank. In general, I have seen a few schools pull some stuff. For example, Tom's first dog was from Leader. Garfield was so sick during training that he couldn't work a couple days, and the trainers and the vet insisted he was fine. Tom took him home, and Garfield just got sicker and sicker. Couldn't keep anything in his system, and Tom couldn't work him for months. It took several calls from the University of PA's Vet Hospital to the school before the school's vet admitted that they had Girardia running through the kennels at the time Gar was there. The Hospital then was able to treat Gar, finally. They couldn't treat him 'til they knew what they were dealing with. I personally think that bout with Girardia lead to his system eventually getting weak, and lead to his early death at 10. Because Tom couldn't work him for so long, at first, he forgot his traffic-checking and they had to go back for refresher training. Gar was still the best darn guide dog I have ever seen. The school knew darn well about the Girardia, and they didn't even check Gar for it while at the school. Tom had to incure huge vet bills, and still came very close to losing Gar. That's what I mean about the schools hiding things from us that they definately should not. When my first guide dog got sick during training, I insisted on them checking her for Girardia. The apprentice trainer I had was flabbergasted I knew of such things. Anyway, Princess came up negative. Sorry this got kinda long. I just wanted to be clear on what I meant. What made you decide to want to get a dog? What school did you go to the first time? When you said it didn't work out? Take care!
