I have never been under the impressin that The Seeing Eye attempted to hide anything from me. I have talked about the respect they have shown mein the past and I have know doubt thatwill continue in the future. I think they are doingan even better job of communicating with us and thefact that theyare involved in the Buddy-l list, which allows people to talk about guide dog issues from all sides is an indication oftheir willingnes to listen. Communicatin breeds understanding when it's good and I'm glad to ee thing get better. WW> Harvey, WW> I simply don't see why you saw anything Charlie said as a WW> "personal attack", The comments above were Charles Crawford's not mine. He implied that I was using rehab as an excuse to avoid personal responsibility for my situation which is not true. I have done much to look for a job, take training and do whatever I could to secure work and take advantage of every opportunity presented to me. WW> Somehow, you still seem to be either missing the point, or WW> perhaps shoosing to ignore it, but no way that most of us see WW> rehab as being totally bad or good like you're trying to paint WW> it. In fact, the director of state services here in Pennsylvania WW> is indeed an NFB member, and if those services have improved one WW> bit for the client since his appointment, it sure is beyond the WW> comprehension of most of us! I am somewhat acquainted with the problems in Pennsylvania as I have a pen pal in Altoona who has a blind child for whom she is having a very difficult time getting services. I never said that Rehab was totally bad. There are good councilors who are trying to do a good job by their clients under trying circumstances, but that doesn't mean that the system as a whole is good. Regarding the director of blind services in Pennsylvania being an N.F.B. member, like any organization, we do have members who think it is politically to their advantage to join the N.F.B. the A.C.B. or both when they can to appear to be on the winning side and to say what each group wants to hear. That's a problem in every state. WW> the general condemnation you seem to WW> want to give them based upon your singular experience is most WW> definitely not justified either! I am by no means the only one with that oppinion. Many people have had overall bad experiences with rehab to the point where they hate to deal with them. They're always crying "budget cuts," as their convenient excuse for not acquiring the equipment or services needed by a blind client, yet they still insists on putting the blind through humiliating psychological profiles, meaningless evaluations needless standardized tests and other things that have never been proven to be worth anything when they could put that money to better use buying equipment and paying for services. Now, I am not saying that there is never in any case, a need for these things, but these should be the acceptions not the rule. After all, a sighted person is hired for a job on the basis of their resume or application. Should it not be the same for a blind person? I remember when a friend of mine who was legally blind but partially sighted sought employment with the Lighthouse of Houston. The director, not noticing his cane right off, told him he had an opening for a forklift driver and he could start that day. When the blind person told him he was legally blind he was told he would have to go through the evaluation process before he could even be considered for hire. Granted, he was not qualified to be a forklift driver, but the point is that as long as the director thought he was sighted he was ready to hire him on the spot. But when he discovered his legal blindness all that suddenly changed. Why? Thanks for the information on your deck. I'm afraid that most of these $99 units will be gone very soon! I was at Radio Shack recently and found a feather touch machine we can operate. It is not as convenient as the standard key down or light touch machines, but it is very respectable. I will discuss it in a later message. If you want auto reverse and multi play options, this is the machine. It is on sale till the end of this month. It is the Optimus Model SCT56, stock number 14-676. It is manufactured for Radio Shack by Pioneer. It is fourty dollars off the regular price. I was looking to find a suitible cassette deck for a friend of mine. I still have my trusty reliable Technics dubbing deck which still works quite well. I purchased the SCT56 to evaluate it. I may keep it for my stereo upstairs, and use the Technics for the stereo in my computer room. I do have the option to return it. Thanks for your post! Enjoyed hearing from you! Thanks! No problem with it even though some drivers were messing with com port and couldn't seem to get an old Accent External synthesizer to work properly till Compaq drivers weren't loaded. It worked fine then. I still have braille display to work with. I called GW Micro Yesterday. That's where I obtained my Dec Express. Mine unfortunately is out of waranty. I was informed they don't repair them. I need to send them $409 which includes shipping plus my old unit and they will send me a new one. I'm wondering whether that is such a good option since the thing cost close to twelve hundred dollars or so and didn't last me much over a year and a half. I'll let you know what I decide to do.
