BLIND PARENTS TO BE FEATURED IN SEPTEMBER 22 CBS MOVIE Release Written by Hap Holly What Love Sees is a made for television movie that will feature Jean Treadway (played by Annabeth Gish), the blind daughter of an over protective New England industrialist (played by Edward Herrmann). In 1944 at age 26, Miss Treadway marries Forrest Holly, (renamed Gordon in the movie and played by Richard Thomas), a blind, rural Southern California rancher. Together they raise 4 children: Forrest Jr. (Gordy), Faith, Billy, and Hap who looses his sight in 1958 at age 7. In 1959 at the close of the movie, the family moves from its small adobe Ramona, California home to nearby Escondido to enroll Hap in a resource program for the blind at Lincoln Elementary School. Forrest Sr. earned the respect of his peers as a quality general building contractor and designer in San Diego County until he retired to Nogales, AZ in 1979, where he continued his leadership in Rotary International and Toastmasters. He gained international recognition for his "Ask A Builder" column, which he wrote for the Christian Science Monitor from 1965 until his death in 1984. While raising 4 children was of course a full time job for Jean, she was a hard worker in her church and blind community. Today she is enjoying active retirement in central Oregon. MOVIE BACKGROUND In 1988 San Diego high school English teacher Susan Vreeland published her first book, entitled "What Love Sees". Canadian publisher Paper Jacks printed some 15,000 copies of this $4.00, 390-page paperback before going bankrupt a year later. Noted Los Angeles Hallmark Hall of Fame producer, David Rosemont, read the book, loved it, then searched 5 years for a network to finance its production into a made for TV movie. He was unsuccessful until his close friend Richard Thomas (of Walton fame) agreed to play the part of Forrest Sr. in 1994; one week later CBS came aboard. ABOUT HAP HOLLY Alanson P. "Hap" Holly settled in Des Plaines, Illinois, in 1974 at age 23 after having received his Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from Principia College in Elsah, Illinois; Married his Tucson, Arizona, sighted summer camp sweetheart, Miss Stephanie Eckman, in 1976; Has been active in the Des Plaines Lions Club since 1975, receiving Lions International's Melvin Jones Fellowship humanitarian award in 1995; Has been active as a Des Plaines Toastmaster since 1977, serving recently as an Area Governor for 2 terms, 1994/95; Has been known nationwide for producing audio informational programming for the U.S. Amateur Radio Service since 1987 via his Radio Amateur Information Network (RAIN); Has performed throughout Chicago over 20 years as a dance band/contemporary keyboard musician and composer. "What Love Sees" was released as a hard cover, large print book by Simon and Schuster subsidiary Thorndike Press in July. It will become available as an audiobook by Recorded Books Inc. Rerelease of the paperback has not been announced. ... Alan, I have honestly believed ever since that anti-guide dog issue of the Monitor that the NFB was in the process of shooting itself in the foot, but it, as well as Resolution 9612, seems to becoming nothing more than a faded memory very quickly! What bothers me the most about this latest tirade from the Federation is, it comes VERY close to defining guide dog users as yet another enemy of the NFB! I tried unsuccessfully to point out how ludicrous this "our enemies" approach commonly used by the Federation appears to those of us who are not members of the organization, how it reeks of the paranoia usually only associated with cults and extremist groups, not consumer organizations, but I guess it's one of those things you can't perceive from within. How anyone could view what could easily have developed into a guide dog users versus cane users, or even a Seeing Eye versus the other guide dog schools battle, both of which we saw signs of happening here in the echo by some of the responses if you read between the lines, as being anything but detrimental to the blind in general, well, what can I say? Instead of the NFB defining SO many enemies, an awfully large portion of them blind as well, don't you think it's about time they start asking themselves WHY they find it necessary to do so? As I said way back when this whole thing started, it sounds very much like the old, "There's a communist behind every tree!" technique used by Senator McCarthy in the early '50s, the only value ever given to it being it got the good Senator a lot of attention and damaged a whole lot of others in the process! Sort of looks like the same thing here, doesn't it, a whole bunch of attention given to this group of blind people with ALL these enemies, while the rest of us, the silent majority in many ways, sit back wondering how much damage is being done to us in the whole process! Maybe someday we will have a unified voice of the blind down here south of the border Alan. It might not be one that every blind person can say they agree with its each and every move, but hopefully it can be one that doesn't appear to harm as much as it helps! If you keep seeing enemies behind every tree it's awfully difficult to travel down the path to get any real work done, and isn't that what we all want after all? Willie ... Vista is about $2700. It's so expensive because it TK>has its own video card, and has 10 different fonts. Another really nice TK>feature is that you can customize the size of the print. If you want, TK>you can have the print displayed as, height of 8 power, and width of 6 TK>power, for example. I don't think Zoom Text can do that. Also, Vista's TK>magnification goes from 2 to 16. Plus, you can change settings with TK>Vista using the mouse, even in DOS. You don't have to go into a menu TK>to start/stop scrolling, change the view, etc. As far as I'm concerned, TK>it's worth every penny. Tammy, Hi!! Thanks for the message that I received on Monday. I apologized for not geting back sooner, beecasue I have been very busy since I calleed here to check for an important E-Mail, but I was not on much since I had a lot of exciting things to work on. My local BBS Sysop fixed PPP (Internet direct connect through a trumpet Winsock). There was a lot of problems with PPP since addresses was conflicting with a BBS IP Address. Before that it was 200.200.200.1 but that was not right. It should be unique address like 146.115.86.131 ((at the end of the address goes up if 131 is being used). It has been fixed. I also had trouble with some of the Client programs, especially for mIRC 4.52 that won't let me to send a file to someone through Internet, what a pain!! Anyway, yeah, I have heard about Vista with its own Video Card from Blinktalk Echo as someone talked about it a long time ago, I still remembered that. I enjoyed reading Blinktalk if something exciting about computer technology. TK>Its hard to believe that your friend had trouble running his LP program, TK>as well as DOS, on his Pentium. They're pretty powerful. I think you are right. But everything must be working OK since my friend contacted his vendor foor help. They were helpful! Very good thing is that his vendor understandd about large print software requires a compatible SVGA card. His monitor is 1024x768x256, that may not work for older software since older software only can go up to 640x480x256 or less, that's all, I believe. Not just Pentium itself, but you said powerful, hehe, well, Video Card is powerful! TK>My sig file has my net address as 1:270/720 because until recently, TK>Stimpy's, where I post in Fido from, didn't have a Blue Wave compatible TK>mail door. And I wanted to be able to enter netmail offline, so that's TK>why I use Howdy's for that. But now, Stimpy has a BW door, so I can TK>actually do netmail from both. Ok, good! Ok, I can send you an Internet or Fido NetMail if anything personal to you! :) No problem. I thought I'd point you to that direction. Well, I will talk with you later. Have a good evening. Hope the weather is great for you! Today it is Thursday, we got a lot of sunshine. High temperatures near 70 degrees, WOW!!! I felt GREAT! But 2 days ago and yesterday we've got a TERRIBLE storm--Rainy with a Low Pressure systemm, UGH!!! Hope you did not get the rain like me! :) Talk to you later. Bye for now. Harvey, I simply don't see why you saw anything Charlie said as a "personal attack", and interpreting any disagreement with you or the NFB as a "personal attack" sure is going to stifle conversation! Somehow, you still seem to be either missing the point, or perhaps shoosing to ignore it, but no way that most of us see rehab as being totally bad or good like you're trying to paint it. In fact, the director of state services here in Pennsylvania is indeed an NFB member, and if those services have improved one bit for the client since his appointment, it sure is beyond the comprehension of most of us! I am not in the habit of defending rehab in general, as yes, I too have had some atrocious experiences with them, but the general condemnation you seem to want to give them based upon your singular experience is most definitely not justified either! Many a Federationist works in rehab Harvey, something the NFB has quite consciously tried to maintain in Pennsylvania and other states for many years, but again, if that has helped the blind population at large in the respective areas, it sure hasn't shown any signs of being the case here in PA! Just as the NFB is neither all good or all bad, so is rehab Harvey! Trying to eliminate the bad and propagate the good is the route we should follow with both! Willie ...
