I read this message with astonishment! What state did this awful accident occur in? I am always a bit wary of home schooling, because I worry that the disabled child won'tget the social contact with other childreen which is essential. However, this is just a personal observation. I don't know that much about home schooling. When I had light and object perception, I use to be able to jay walk across a wide open square, when I was in college, by focusing on a building, and thus cutting down on my distance to walk, to get there faster. I couldn't do that today, or even do that at night, because I could not see the building at night. I also use to be able to see light coming through doorways, which helped me to find my classrooms easier and still walk down the middle of the hallway. Even that little bit of sight helped out a lot more than what I have today. I can see another possible nuisance with being blind after seeing for a whole lifetime. All their lives, sighted people have been able to pick up a pencil and paper and write down phone numbers, reminders, and all the other little notes that occur as a daily part of living. Now, those people suddenly have no way to make little notes that they can read. Now, suddenly, some blind diabetics do not have the sense of touch that some of us long-time blinks have developed. Now, they cannot learn braille due to lack of tactile sensation, or if they can, it takes ages. The next job is how can you tell the difference between the buttons on a tape recorder when you can't even feel the difference between different sets of dots on a page? I think I would rather be blind since birth. Just imagine suddenly not being able to drive a car or walk to the corner store. Mobility doesn't come easy to me, so how do the people who lost their vision ever pick it up? --- QScan/PCB v1.16b / 01-0075 * Origin: PSL Online Houston, TX 713-442-6704 @psl-online.com (1:106/6256)
