RM>> Are there any Winter scout campers out there. UM> I like winter camping - in scouts too ;) JH> I like Scouts - but I couldn't eat a whole one...! Just add Tobasco or Louisiana Hot Sauce! We have campouts planned year 'round. The weather hasn't cooperated to make any of our camps "winter". In November, we camped at a state park an hour away which has a roller rink and the boys worked on their skating merit badge. It got down in the mid thirties F. In December, we overnighted on the USS Kidd in Baton Rouge, saw their Christmas parade, bonfire and fireworks - it was cold, about 34 degrees F, wind chill in the teens. Returning from this trip, we encountered snow flurries at the Mississippi state line and it got worse as we travelled north on Interstate 55. The Jackson Metro area ended up with a record snowfall of 4"-8" - the 8" being in Clinton and the areas west of Jackson. We we were driving, one of the boys said, "Thank you God, my prayers have been answered!" I told him he needed to pray that we make it home safely. In January, the boys went on a trip to a farm owned by one of the boys families - they worked on a Compass course. My son and I didn't go as we were at a confirmation retreat at a United Methodist camp. It only got down in the 40s that weekend. In February, we won't have a campout - Scout Sunday took the available weekend. Next month, we are planning a hiking trip to Shiloh Military Park in Tennessee. We are planning to use a few days of the boy's Spring Break for this trip. What kind do you carry and why did you select it? I normally carry a Scout style but military issue type knife made by Camillus. It's all stainless steel and is a pretty good little knife. I carried one for years in the military and it is a good camp, utility or Scout style knife, The blade gets dull fast but is easy to sharpen. --- ProBoard v2.16 [Reg] * Origin: Computer Connection BBS <> Irving, TX USA (1:124/7008) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 237 SCOUTING #2 Ref: F2U00001 Date: 02/24/98 From: JOHNN MUDD Time: 07:09am \/To: ALL (Read 0 times) Subj: Houston BBS Sorry to use an international forum for local info, but I need to find out! Since I have had some experience here I will offer some suggestions. First call your local Scout office. They should know of troops that are receptive. I hope that the Scout's parents are involved, any leader will need the assistant and a parent is instant access to the child's likes, dislikes, problems and moods. There is also knowledge of the equipment being used and they would have a vehicle with the necessary equipment for transportation. I have never been involved with any scout that had major physical problems but even then I was always glad to have Dad there to give insight. JM> Thanks to all in advance! And good luck to you. What kind do FO> you carry and why did you select it? I was given a stainless steel knife with my name inscribed in it by my wife several years ago. I've lost it several times, but it keeps coming back. For example, I was using it to open a pipe chase during a project I was working on at a U. S. Post Office about an hour's drive from my home. I think I left it on a ladder. The Postmaster mailed it to me. It is now currently lost again, but I know it'll show up. I'm currently carrying a standard Boy Scout knife I bought for my son. It was on my dresser along with my other pocket items, so I started carrying it. I also sometimes carry *my* standard Cub Scout knife when it surfaces. A few years ago, I got a stainless steel set offered by a gasoline card company. The big knife is now useless and the part which holds the knife has expanded, causing the blade and screwdriver attachment to wobble. All of these knives hold a good edge - I occasionally sharpen them using the knife sharpener built into my can opener. Hi James, Are you still having problems recieveing talking points to the BBS. Does it come in as fido mail? Do you use Water Gate? If so I may know what the problem is.. It seems that ScoutBase address things funny and it gets all messed up when converted to fido, gets stuck and that's the end of it. Although this probably doen't help you, cause IIRC your a sysop and would therefore notice such events upon your own BBS.
