This BBS is shutting down the middle of next month and I'm not sure if I can find another to fill its place. None have been as reliable as this one. I'll keep looking but til then you're in my thoughts. I think! }{ello All, Hopefully the following will not look as if I am blowing my horn but to explain why I have been unheard of for about 3 months. My scouting career has been extremely busy for me of late. We had our pack recruiting... Went from 3 boys to 73 within 10 months since took over as Cubmaster. Talk about scrambling to fill positions! We signed 43 new boys on signup night. Completed Wood Badge training... Now officially a member of Gilwell Troop 1 Bobwhite patrol. Now gonna work the ticket. Have accepted a position with the District committee as Cub Scout Activities Chairman. Was approached to sit on Council level outdoor programming and activities committee but had to turn it down for now (too stinking busy!). My position with the troop as ASM will most probably change to Committee Chairman in about a week since the troop is in dire need of redirection and programming. Troop is on last breath and recruiting starts in two weeks and Charter Representative has stated that we WILL redirect and he will replace current sitting CC as he has not been to any function or meeting in 9 months (why'd he wait so long? Who knows!) He approached me to see if I would be interested in "trading hats" and I told him I would. Have been nominated for the District Award of Merit for the recovery of the pack program as well as other things I have done of late and now have been asked to recover the troop. Council level "big wigs" have approached me for a synopsis on what I did to improve a more or less dead pack. Even the Council Executive had a iscussion with me for some possible ideas to incorporate into the council level cub ack recruit and retention program. I have been in the council for exactly 1 year to date and people are looking to find me to fill positions. I thinks I have enough... So in a nutshell, I am returning as now I have a few more hours available since most of the program planning and recruiting is completed. Regards; John A. No the Army is not my career, I'm a Captain in a TA Regiment. The Wife is in the full time Air Force but is actually posted to a Navy Base. The move wasn't bad, there was a heck of a mess that passed for my office/computer oom when I got home but that was soon cleaned up. :)) Here in Canada there are no international scout camps Burly, I think there re a couple in the US but I'm not sure. However, Toronto Region has a huge camp at Haliburton and employ a good number of Venturers & Rovers over the summer up there. I will try to get you the Regions Address so you can write to em. Yep, it does take about 2 weeks for the messages to get back and forth across the pond. I am seeking some opinions about Woodbadge and other adult Scouter advancement and recognition. I have been involved in Scouting since 1963 when I joined Cub Scouts. I've also been a Boy Scout, Explorer Scout and Scouter. I've been a Scouter for about 20 years, mostly as an Assistant Scoutmaster and/or Committee member. I have been an adult Scouter in 5 different troops in 5 different councils. I am a believer in training and believe that all Scouts deserve trained adult leaders. However, I have always had an issue with "advancement" for adult Scouters. in the Boy Scouts this is usually in the form of Woodbadge. While Woodbadge is a training program, it has been my observation that it is viewed as advancement or as a status symbol for adult Scouters rather than as a training program. It also appears to be very "political" in some areas. I have noticed that some who have earned the Woodbadge beads to treat those of us who haven't as lesser Scouters. I am involved in Scouting for three reasons: I like and support the Scouting movement and what it does for our young people and our communities; I enjoy helping our young people learn and develop valuable skills; and I enjoy camping and other outdoor activities. Basically I am a Scouter for the boys, not for myself. I always try to stay in the background and avoid recognition for my involvement with Scouting. In out troop, we try to have a Boy Scout operated troop with the adult Scouters acting in an advisory and support role. Scouts can't learn much if the adults do it all. I may be way off base but I think that Woodbadge, while a good program, needs to be re-focused as a training program and not as a status. If we as adult Scouters, want or need a means to advance, (such as Scouts do, through the ranks), then we need to identify that need to the senior Scout ing leadership and try to get it formally implemented in the program. But I think that it would detract from our primary purpose as advisors and supporters. Just a thought.
