What are your views about scouts going co-ed LC> while girl guides is remaining a all girl organization? How is the LC> new scouting/guiding year going so far? any intersting plans for LC> the coming year? what was the last badge that you earned? Well LC> that's a few topics to disscussion i would love to get a LC> conversation going with someone so if you have an opinon on any of LC> the above or others please write me a message back My boyfriend and I were talking about that just the other day! I'd corrected something that one of the leaders said in a letter, (where they'd dictated "boys" , I'd said that should be youth or something..) but he was stunned that it was co-ed. He figured that it was only Beavers that was Co-Ed. I don't have a problem with it being co-ed, but at the same time, you'd think that Girl Guides would have done the same for Boys.. The two programs are simaler, but are definitely different, and while being able to put both children in the same groups may be great for some families, we opted for letting the kids each have their own groups. (They're going through the stage of either loving each other dearly, or tearing each others eyes out on a constant basis). We feel that it's important for them to each have their time away, and their "own" thing.. Though we did ask her if she wanted to be a Spark, or a Beaver (she visits Beavers periodically since I am the leader, and a babysitter isn't always available). She wanted either Sparks, or BOTH Beavers and Sparks.. Spoken like a true kid! All in all, I don't really have an opinion on it though, for some it may be more convenient to be able to enroll all the kids in the same program, like I say, we didn't choose that option, but in some ways it was nice to have an option. We just thought that enrolling both of the kids in the same program would have been suicide.. Tammy J. Wilson tjw@cybertap.com twilson@edwards.com --- * Origin: * T.S. I've been really busy since we last chatted, I had to do a 9 week army eserve stint this summer so I could be promoted, while I was away my wife, who's in the Air Force, was posted to Victoria so she had to look after the move and all the associated crap that goes along with that. I arrived here and found I had inherited the troop from hell so I'm none too happy about that. Hey, MF> Its the usual sectioning. 'Kea' Scouts from 6-8 years, Cub Scouts from MF> 8-10 1/2, Scouts fro 10 1/2 to 14 1/2, Venturers to 19, and Rovers from MF> there up to some funny age I dunno about ;-) We dont have segregation MF> as far as Girl and Boy Scouts, theyre all mixed in the scout units.. MF> they often get segregated into an individual patrol, however. do they both follow the same program? does this mean that there is female leaders? what's up with the half ages? MF> Umm... Im in the venturer section now, the 15-19 year bracket, but my MF> particular unit is pretty quiet.. most of us are occupied with other MF> things.. Work/School/Life in general... myself included ;) Where i live our cadet unit is (or was i'm not sure about numbers for this year) the bigest cadet unit in Canada. Last year we had 21 members. For me i have other comitments but guiding has become a part of who i am so i always make sure i have the time for it. MF> What else.. Cub Days are well attended, as are national Ventures... but MF> the scouting movement is pretty dead to be honest.... MF> Its one of those things which isnt 'trendy'... so we dont get many MF> people joining in after they hit sort of, early teens... It's not very 'trendy' here eighter. it's prefectly normal until you hit the early teens and then most people drop out unless they have friends in their unit and they all decided to stay in. It is hard thought to be in an oraganizations that people make fun of a lot. If you can manage to stay in untill mid to late teens you come to realize that there is nothing wrong with it you enjoy it and you learn to dismiss what other people say. I have even worn my uniform to school on thinking day. MF> So I dunno.. its something which Id like to change.. but I dont find MF> myself enthused by activities anymore.. id much rather have a MF> leadership position - its where I feel I can contribute... If Ventures are anything like they are here i would have to tell you that the program is what you make it. If you aren't enthused about the activities you are doing then come up with new ones. Is it possible to work in a unit as a junoir leader. You won't have offical leader stautes but you still get to do every thing the leaders do you just can't do stuff like count for numbers which i don't understand what's so magical about the age 18 i do the same work the leaders do i'm responsible but i can't for kid to leader ratio. I guess they need some who is of legal age. but right now i'm not to worried about it cause in febuary i'll be 18 well gotta go i just got back from a spark meeting (5 and 6 years old) and still have to start my homework L8R Elaine Sapphire MF> ...
