From one Cubmaster to another.... YOU do not have to attend all the outings. "Suggest" your leaders set up a tour to say.... the police station, and let them set the date. Allow the individual dens to set it up and act on it, ie the whole pack is not invited. The Den Leader can set the date, time etc and all you have to do is basically file the Tour permit and get Committee approval for that outing, rather you attend or not. I'm understanding from your comments above that you must work the second hift at your job. The Den leaders SHOULD plan and act upon a tour relevant to hat they are studying on at the time... FIRST AID: Fire Department etc. It is ot your responsibility to set it up. I allow the dens that wish to go on a tour to open it up for the whole pack f they choose to but do not require it. For example. I set up a tour of the local GM auto assembly plant (They build the Chevy Cavalier, Pontiac Starfire) and opened it up to the pack. Out of 7 boys in the pack 15 showed with at least one parent. They were allowed to bring siblings and parents. Tour totalled 37 people to include myself and my wife plus both of my boys (one Bear and one soon to be Tiger). A successful outing. The Tiger den recently went bowling as a DEN only. All Tigers participated... The Tiger Cub Coach set it up. Let the Den Leaders and parents of the den do the work. If you are unable to participate then tell the parents/Den Leaders your schedule and allow them he opportunity to decide if they wish you to be there by scheduling it around you. If not, do not take it personally as "maybe they would prefer not aving someone looking over their shoulder." This gives the Den Leaders the impression that you are "trusting" them to do as is necessary, not implying that this is the case. Therefore they may become good at booking tours etc. that will interest their particular needs/desires. Regards; John A. Etling ------------------------------------------- Asst. Hi Brian: I am the librarian for the Port Alberni District Boy Scouts on our shelves we have a few recipe books from Scout groups on Vancouver Island. We also have a NORTHWEST DUTCH OVEN COOKING SEMINAR book but have not tried the recipes. It has quite a lot of recipes. What would you be most interested in? I will give you a couple. Let me know if you would like more and of what. In it there is even a couple of recipes that look like Texas (grin) like POLLOS en NARANJA and EMPANADAAS GOURMET. HAMBURGER STEW WITH DUMPLINGS 2 lbs Hamburger 4 Carrots 4 Potatoes 2-3 stalks Celery 1-2 Onions 1 Large can tomatoes Bisquick Garlic salt Salt and Pepper Milk 2-3 cups of water Preheat the Dutch oven (use 10-12 briquets). Brown the hamburger and drain. While the hamburger is cooking, cut up the carrots, potatoes, onions and celery into 1" pieces. Open the can of tomatoes. Add all of the ingredients to the drained hamburger. Add the water to the oven but do not overfill. Place the lid on the oven and cook for about 30 minutes. Check the stew and cook for another 15-20 minutes. Prepare the dumpling mixture. Use the directions on the Bisquick box for dumplings. Lift the lid off the Dutch oven and drop the mixture by spoonfuls into the boiling stew. Cover the oven again and cook for 15-20 minutes. Serve and enjoy. To clean the oven: After the stew is removed and the oven cooled, pour hot water into the oven and wipe the oven clean. Pour the water out and dry the oven near the fire. Wipe vegetable oil in the oven. CHARCOAL RECOMMENDATIONS: Start 25 briquets. Use 10-12 under the oven and 5-10 on top of the oven. HINTS: Be careful the stew will be HOT! RIBS IN BBQ SAUCE 3-4 lbs of ribs 1/8 cup oil Favorite BBQ sauce Preheat the Dutch oven. Using the oil, brown the ribs. Cover and bake in the oven at a moderate heat for 45 minutes. Remove lid, drain excess moisture (if necessary) and pour BBQ sauce over ribs, covering generously. Cook at a moderate heat for 15 minutes, check the meat, if it isn't done, check at 15 minute intervals. HINT: Use a trivet to keep the ribs from sticking. CHARCOAL RECOMMENDATIONS: Use 10 briquets on the bottom and 12 on the top.
