I wanted to let you know I received your letter between den meetings, committee meetings and troop activities (yes I am a Cub leader too!) I printed it out just now, and I promise to discuss it with my Scoutmaster as soon as I see him which should be at least by next Monday. I will not catch my breath between activities! Pack 24 is in Northeast Ohio in the city of Geneva. The pack is in its third year. I have two boys. The third grader is a lonely Bear as he is the only one. The fourth graders are the Webelos. The Tigers are numbering at five. My first grader is in that den. As you can see, it slow for us. The first Tiger den meeting was more for the adults as two moms and one dad are also new to scouting and we've never had an organized Tiger den. I've not been reading the Nets for awhile since I could not find action in the parenting, scouting, type conferences, before. The SysOp (Maintenanceman he calls himself) of ALLSCOUTS BBS in Knoxville, Kentucky renewe my interest in looking at the conerences. Mentioned at our Pack 24 adult committee meeting about doing more with BBS's, conferences, etc, and got shot down promptly by a computer illiterate Scout Master. Hi Beau, You sound as busy as I am!! I have just given up my Rover Crew to another advisor to take on the ADC Scouts job. I think I was better off before! I have tried to make contact before with councils in Washington but have never received a reply, and it is so rare to see a Scouter from there on the net. Glad to have made contact with you. We have three very active troops up here and all are interested in joint activities. We have some great camps as I'm sure you do to. Have your boys ever been up for the Vancouver Coast Region Nite Hike? We normally see a big number of US Scouts up for that, but I'm normally to busy to talk to them. Last year we had three troops up from Whitby Island NAS. One of their Patrols won the event! I understand you have to talk to your Scoutmaster, I understand. Hope to hear from you soon. Also many kids are leaving the troop because There are sometimes good reasons for that which you may not be aware of. I forced one adult out of the program because he overreacted when someone ducked his son under water, and was threatening to sue. He had been an eagle scout, and would probably have been my successor as scoutmaster, but we can't put up with people who threaten to sue. We forced an adult out of the program when he was found in a closed tent with a scout at scout camp. > they say it's just not fun anymore. Radioactive Isotope? There are a lot of good games in Woods Wisdom, which is a loose-leaf book of ideas for scoutmasters. Someone should buy a copy, and you should plan these at your patrol leaders conference, once a month. The SPL runs it, and the SM or ASM helps with ideas. > having problems recruiting, esp. from the cub scouts. --- FMail/386 Recruiting from cub scouts is best done by adults who get in contact with the cubmasters. Boys can help by acting as den chiefs. These are good leadership positions for first class scouts who need leadership to be star, and they help bring cubs into the troop that the den chief came from. I run a family "G" rated board, PW> myself. You might want to "enlighten" your "computer illiterate" Scoutmaster that a merit badge could be earned by the Scouts if any of them would be interested.... AND you could be the merit badge counselor... Why would the Scoutmaster have "final" say in what the Cub Scouts are doing anyways?? Is he a committee member? If so is he the ONLY committee member besides you? I played the same type of game when I started the cub pack in PA. a few years back and "debated" enough with the committee that the Scoutmaster decided since he didn't control the meetings anymore (simply a committee member) he neglected to show for further meetings... and about 75% of my ideas went thru the rest of the committee. Therefore causing the pack to increase from 12 boys to over 30 in one year... MAKE IT FUN, KEEP IT SIMPLE... word of mouth makes for better recruitment... Basically what I'm saying is this... if you want it DO it. Introduce your boys to a computer at your home or where ever and watch them blossom... and they will.
