Yep. I would caution you JD> against wearing the knife or carrying it on your person. Placing it JD> in your kit is far better - you cannot be accused of holding it as a JD> weapon. Indeed, although if I'm wandering 'round a campsite during the day I generally carry my knife in a pocket somewhere incase it's needed (not much use having it if you have to go and fish it out of your bag every time it's wanted). I've written to my local MP to ask about what classes as a "good reason" for carrying a knife, if he replys I'll post the information in this echo. JD> On the subject of knives, what are your opinions on the best knife for JD> a camp? I strongly prefer a sharp lock knife to any of these "Swiss JD> Army Knife" contraptions with up to fifty different ways of making JD> yourself bleed . I found a sheath knife was only good for JD> wrestling the occasional grizzly or skinning an aligator. What do you JD> think? I think Swiss Army knives are definatly a bad idea - I can never use the darned things right and I never /have/ needed to use the little wiggly thing for getting stones out of horses shoes... I nearly bought a lock knife, and most of the Ventures in our unit have one or similar, they seem to work quite okay. I personally have a sheath knife (but only a relativly small one) as I find it handy for chopping bits of wood up and suchlike. There's one bloke in our unit who has a HUGE sheath knife - about 30cm of very sharp metal with a serated edge on the top. It's possibly a bit excessive for normal situations, but did come in rather handy for skinning rabbitts at a recent survival camp. Our banquet is not until June, but we have ours catered. We used to do the pot luck thing but found too many problems with people changing their minds on what they decide to bring so we end up with duplicate items and not enough, etc...
