Your family is obviously made of the right stuff; we can't have too many of yr type quitting or there won't be enough momentum around to wake up the other folk.... When I was District President a few years ago, my predecessor (who had recruited me to the job) asked me, "Do you know what Scouting's really all about? - Teaching people to get along with one another!" Notice that my friend did NOT tell me that it was going to be easy! Most of the worthwhile things seem to be tough sledding: saying NO to drugs, speaking up when folks insult others or do wrong. These things aren't impossible, and they DO impact Strongly on others, BUT they aren't easy. There are several different personality styles: some are Pushy and self-centred. They need to know that their methods could be improved. You have a different style: show them - AND yr son - how to make it work! Ooops, almost forgot to finish telling you the most important thing about my friend: he added,"I've changed a lot through being in Scouting; I didn't use to be a very nice person....". And so endeth one part of the lesson (I'll let others give you specific suggestions to apply to yr situation; then we'll look forward to hearing what yr particular solutions are so that we have a few more arrows in our quivers, too!). yis, Lorne White, Patrol Counsellor, 1st Sherkston Troop Port Colborne District, Niagara Region, Ontario, Canada --- GEcho 1.11+ * Origin: Another World,Niagara South ON CDA,905-871-9502 (1:247/300) (1:247/300) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 237 SCOUTING #2 Ref: D3A00003 Date: 03/05/96 From: DON BACH Time: 07:24am \/To: MARCUS CORDLE (Read 3 times) Subj: Knives MC> Hi ther don how are you doing? I am Doing Great. That's great. I'm doing really good. MC> I think MC> is not a good idea for kids to have Knifes There are places where knives are really handy. Kids should not have knives in school except in art and biology classes where they need them. In our Cub Scouting program, we teach the proper use of a pocket knife. The boys are given safety instructions and practice on pieces of soap. If sucessful, they earn a "Whittling Chip" card which allows them to carry and use knives at scout meetings and events. The boys need to use knives to shape their Pinewood Derby Cars and many other projects in scouting.
