Pocket knives have no place in school and should be banned there as they are in the Clinton Public Schools. Knives should only be used in school where there is a reason to, like high school biology disection. The issue here is having knives on scout expeditions, where they are necessary. To do that you have to be 14 years old and have the camping, first aid, swimming, and canoeing merit badges. We also try to go on a campout every month. Usually they are just local things, but this month we are going to go camping at an Air Force base down south. Our meetings are every Monday and we try to do a skill or activity every month. This month we are doing hobbies and things that people collect. One person did a demonstration on playing his guitar and others did them on model rocketry and fishing. We have different positions in our troop. The meetings are run by the Senior Patrol Leader and the ASPL. I am currently the venture crew chief and am responsible for coordinating all of the venture crew activities. I hope this gives you an idea of what scouting is like over here. Wouldn't have it any other way. I'm a PADI diver, but have taken both SSI & NAUI classes so that when I dive with folk trained by those orgs., we all do - & expect of each other - exactly the same things. Buddies being on the same page is a diving necessity. What disinclines me to go to FSB is *not* that there's a regimen to follow, but that the standards are geared toward FSB's typical clientele - youngsters trying it for the 1st time or just-certified & pretty inexperienced. Close monitoring by DMs is crucial when dealing with novices, but an experienced diver will neither be thrilled by the few critters not chased off by a guided herd of thrashing novices passing by, nor be enthusiastic about surfacing with tanks more than half full because the novices went thru their alloted air like puppies thru kibbles. Can't fault the kids: we all started as novices & wouldn't dive if it weren't exciting. Can't fault BSA or FSB or the DMs, nor imposition of more conservative safety regs than industry standard: they're just protecting someone else's kids. But divers beyond that stage aren't going to have as much fun, & BSA mandates *only* industry standards when Scouts dive anywhere other than FSB. For divers - kids & adults alike - already accustomed to more, FSB might not be quite so High Adventure as the promotional literature states. * Origin: Missing Link Indian Hills CO USA 303-697-4097 (1:104/693) * OLX 2.2 TD * --- WILDMAIL!/WC v4.12 * Origin: The Missing Link, Indian Hills, CO, USA 303.697.4097 1:104/693.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 237 SCOUTING #2 Ref: D2L00005 Date: 02/15/96 From: CHRIS BEHRENS Time: 03:24am \/To: ALL (Read 3 times) Subj: Howdy! What age are your brownies? Badges in the manual are full of ideas and activities. Have the girls look at the book and pick those they would be fun to work with. Pre-activity drawings, puzzles, games also help. Make sure every girl has a "job". Call attendance, dues, clean-up checker, snack, drink, hostess, song, lead promisse, ... It makes them feel important. In spring you might like to do a hike arround the meeting place and then work on the outdoor skills. Do you have a camp certified parent to help you out? Does your service team or council plan any events? It is easier to go to those events and learn how they plan it. The kids would enjoy Sea Base more than the adults who are experienced divers. Hence we call it "Boy" Scouts.
