Origin: Another World,Niagara South ON CDA,905-871-9502 (1:247/300) LW> (1:247/300) Lorne, I have no problem with supplying trees to your Scouts, regarding a tax # I also understand and no need to go to more trouble than is neccessary. If you will just get me a letter on your official stationary I will consider it sufficent. As per your question on shipping costs I would not expect it to be more than $10 or $15 US including C.O.D. charges. I believe I would have to ship to Buffalo as United Parcel Service will not ship live trees out of the US. On the other hand if you can find out what Canadian Customs or whoever regulates such stuff on your side of the imaginary line requires let me know and if it's not to much of a hassle we will work around it. This info would be of great help to me as I have had the opportunity to do some business in Canada but have neglected to do so due to my unfamiliarity with the regulations and lack of knowledge of which bureaucrat to question. You can plant these trees any time after dormancy, the real key is to get them in the ground an allow the hair roots to become settled in before the next growing season, normally here that would be no problem as rain does the job and the frost line is not 6 inchs. In your case I believe it freezes a little deeper, my best advice would be to find a local tree person/expert and take your cue from what they say as they are more familiar with your particular set of conditions than I will ever be. As for the trees themselves they are pretty hardy and should present no more transplanting problems than an Oak or Maple. Yes you can heel them in over the winter, but again if you decide to do it that way find someone who is familiar with the local conditions. Yes, I do have information on Chestnut trees, not a lesson plan or anything like that, just information, I will send it under separate cover please supply an address. Keeping Varsity aged Scouts interested in a program is tough at best .. Our Team here elected to take on one "special" interest and that ended up being Scuba Diving... and it has worked well, where new members of the Team are trained thru one of the recognized agencies that BSA uses.. But diving isn't our only activity.. The Team voted to go things that teenagers like to do.. This may sound crazy, but they go to a mall as a group.. Hit a movie.. and once a year, my wife and I open our living room to the Team members and they throw themselves a big pizza party.. watch some video's and when the time comes, they just open their sleeping bags on the floor and crash. The parents are told what is going on and they approve of all these activities.. and we even have had a couple of Fathers join in the diving instruction.. Mom's help out with the pizza party and it works well.. Most of these teenagers also attend a regular Scout Troop meeting and are instructors for younger Scouts.. You may want to contact your Council office.. since LDS is a big backer of Varsity Scouting and they can tell you where the monthly "huddle" ( roundtable ) is located.. I hope this helps..
