I have been away from the echo for sometime. My name is Bruce Jolly, I am SysOp of TRUE GRIT BBS. A Family, Boy Scout, DeMolay & Masonic BBS, in Vancouver Washington. 1-360-737-8977, FidoNet 1:105/127. I am also a member of the Vancouver ELKS #823, who is the sponser of the BSA troop I am also the Scout Master of, which is BSA Trp 316, in the Cascade Pacific Council. 316 has been chartered now by the ELKS for 67 years, and while that in it's self is not as long as many other troops, we have a impressive list on file of 154 EAGLE SCOUTS, from my troop, which we believe to be a record. To honor Scouting & Trp 316, the ELKS are creating a Scouting Museum, in our lodge. I am in dire need of the first 3 editions of the Boy Scout Manuals, as well as period uniforms, patches and other Scouting items to go in this worthwhile cause. I can buy or trade you for these items, and would also like to hear from our brothers & sisters outside the U.S.A. for items of Scouting from your countries. Donations of course gladly accpeted. :-) If any of you could help me with this project, I would be in your debt, as would my lodge. You may contact me through this echo, or my BBS via the number & FidoNet address as listed. Thank you for your time, and may all your trails be happy ones. Hi, Thanks for your ideas....One of the other groups here in Lindsay did the Trails End popcorn and in a two week campaign raised $700.00...Not bad. They found it was better to take the orders from public and then purchase only what was required to fill the orders...Another group not too far from here and still in our District purchased the popcorn first...several months ago and only very recently has sold enough to pay for the popcorn and come out ahead with $67.00. If in future we choose to do the TrailsEnd we'll take the orders first. Had thought about doing maybe a "Penny Harvest" but with the recent "Change for the Environment" campaign that might not be a good idea right ow. Also thought about maybe doing a Canadian Tire Stash somehow...not quite sure...Usually people have a bit of Canadian Tire money lying around somewhere..Anyway..thanks again... Hi Alan, Perth eh? A friend of mine is originally from there...his family is still there as well...His name is Eric Dean...not in the scouting movement though...As for John Jones, I myself haven't heard of him, however I've only been in Lindsay for about seven years... Thanks for your reply, I've got a few responses. This past week we did a mall display here in town to collect pledges for Scoutrees and tie it in with Earth Day and the planting of 50,000,000th tree. Didn't do too adly. This Thursday we're having our annual potluck family banquet which should be a huge success.. Carl Coulter of the Toronto Argonauts is going to be our guest speaker and all the boys in the group are so excited...Carl grew up in Lindsay and was also involved for several years in Scouts so we're all looking forward to hearing him speak... If you come up with any new fundraising ideas, let me know, Helen Hawkins Chairperson 6th Lindsay Scouts --- * Origin: Imperial Ballroom BBS - Lindsay ON, Canada (1:229/712) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 237 SCOUTING #2 Ref: C4V00035 Date: 04/24/95 From: LORNE WHITE Time: 11:02pm \/To: JERRY MERCER (Read 3 times) Subj: Flag Ceremony Dear Jerry: JM>LW> For example, Canadian Troops break the flag in JM>Horsehoe ^^^ Please explain ? JM>Does this mean you stand in a horsehoe and open the flag from a JM>folded condition ? Yes, the Scouts stand in their Patrols, end-to-end, forming a horseshoe or "U" shape, with the Scouters and the Flag Pole(s) across the open end of the "U". The Flag has been pre-rolled & raised to the top of the pole with the halyard looped into itself so that, when it is pulled, on command, the flag breaks forth gloriously into the breeze [lots of hot air from the Scouters?] while the Troop salutes. We have no pledge because the flag is considered to be the symbol of the Monarch & country (I say this as someone who is a dying breed as a Monarchist), and the salute is a statement of Loyalty. The Scout Promise also includes Duty to Queen & Country. At the end of the meeting, the Colour Party, on command, lowers and folds & ties the flag (ready for hoisting to the masthead at the next meeting), and hands it to the Scouter for storage. Still looking for someone with Canadian or (British) [darn those Russians for stealing the word "Commonwealth", meaning that we have to explain which one we mean...] Commonwealth military tradition who can explain how to dispose of a worn Flag. What is done in Churches with the dedicated Colours of the various Regiments? Do they hang there for all time? JM>We, our pack, do toast, if at a dinner or banquit, or at least JM>recognize all visitors to every meeting. However a toast to the JM>queen would be out of order here. Why is it out of order for to toast the health of our Queen, Jerry, when we toast the Office of your President, as a courtesy? We certainly aren't offering to join the US Army, nor would you be declaring your undying loyalty to Her Majesty as Queen of Canada. There must be some major principle here that has developed over the years.... Anyone know the theory of this? One last question Jerry: where is Trinidad, Malakoff - Circle 10? and what is "WDL Pack 345 Tool"?
