I know it must be quite different from the USA routine because the Monarch IS the country (under the ancient rules of feudalism) and, in the case of the United Kingdom (and also of Canada, come to think of it) the Union Jack is the Monarch's personal flag. (Don't quite know what status that gives to our youthful 30-year-old Maple Leaf Flag....) Since Canada hasn't had much in the way of Armed Forces since the Korean War (nice to be under the American umbrella!), not many Canadian adults know the appropriate military traditions, and since we all watch USA TV, we've really lost a lot of our history. It would be nice to get back a bit of it for our young Canuck Scouts. Any ideas about Canadian traditions, and differences with USA ones would be appreciated. For example, Canadian Troops break the flag in Horsehoe to open our meetings. I've heard that USA Troops raise the flag. Is it true and why the difference? Another example: at Canadian Rotary meetings, we toast the Queen of Canada, and then, as a courtesy, offer toasts to the Head of State of the country of any visitors. Americans never seem to extend the same courtesy; why not, when Americans are usually about the friendliest folk anywhere? yis Lorne White, Scout Counsellor 1st Sherkston Troop Port Colborne District, Niagara Region, Ontario Canada --- GEcho 1.11+ * Origin: Another World Bbs (Fort Erie,Ont.) Neat place! 3 of the best western US week-long whitewater runs start in Dinosaur National Monument, which straddles the Colorado-Utah border, & I always plan an extra day to stop at the museum there, & to cruise the arroyos looking for Anasazi Indian petroglyphs. SM> This year, we had a winter camp, where we slept in an outdoor SM> shelter. (In case you haven't visited Saskatchewan in the SM> winter, the temperature is usually around -30 degrees, celsius.) In 1981 ('83?), I went to Manitoba to photograph a total solar eclipse in February. I got as far N as Thompson, N of Lake Winnepeg, but finally decided on Pipestone, on the Assiniboine, as the best place to get my pix. Got quite brisk. BTW, I got better pix than any I subsequently saw in the astronomy trade magazines! ;-) I've got a good 4-season tent, & have used it in cold weather & at altitude, but, given a choice, I'd rather build & sleep in a quinzee. No matter what the outside temp is, the inside stays just a couple degrees below freezing. SM> However, anything we've ever done at camps, or ever will do at SM> camps, none of it would be anywhere near as exciting as what SM> you do at camps. Naaah! The spectacular stuff doesn't happen every time, & the gonzo extravaganza we did with the 5th Christchurch lot was a one- shot gig to show 'em a whirlwind great time. I'm going to the UK next summer to visit them, & expect sort of the same frantic pace, but I don't think I could survive too many such camps of nothing but back-to-back thrills-&-chills! I'm going to be an ASM for a provisional Troop at our summer resident camp this July, & we've got some special things planned, but it'll still be pretty much a normal week at summer camp. SM> Regina is holding the CFL's Grey Cup this year, and I'm fortunate SM> enough to be able to see it live! Denver's football team - the Broncos - have been to the NFL Super Bowl 3 times in the last few years, but they always get thoroughly stomped. The stadium is fine for home-town crowds, but pretty lame compared to the big domed stadiums, & it's never been seriously considered as a Super Bowl site. Denver's new major league baseball team - the Colorado Rockies - is a brand new expansion team, & nowhere close to *real* big league standards yet, but they've got a new stadium that'll be able to host the World Series ... maybe in about 10 years! I'm *sorta* in Explorers: I'm helping to get a brand new Post off the ground by pitching in as a resource for rock climbing, shooting sports, & whitewater river running. I'm actually a generic adult gopher for a couple of Boy Scout Troops just S of Denver, Colorado, & I'm mostly interested in High Adrenalin ... uh, make that "High Adventure" ... activities, so I usually work with the older Scouts. When a new Post formed 3 months or so ago, I guess they had heard I was a soft touch when it came to the exciting stuff, so now I'm advising/supervising *them*, too. I've been to a climbing gym with the Post, out to Denver Area Council's summer camp to play on the climbing tower (it's actually pretty neat in the off-season, w/o the screaming mob), up into the mountains to play on rock, & back down to camp to shoot some clays. Post 94 was chartered in January, & it's already the largest Post in the Council, with 47 Explorers. Surprised me, 'cause I thought Explorer Posts would be more popular. And the District Exec tells me it's the *only* Post in the Denver area that has more girls than boys. Since girls have wider hips & lower centers of gravity than boys of the same size/weight, they have a marked advantage over boys in sport climbing, target shooting, & kayaking, and the P-94 girls have sure run rings around the guys so far! They're going to do a whitewater sequence starting in 2 wks - a mtg night of class- room stuff, 3 Saturdays learning basic kayaking (2 in a pool & the 3rd in a lake), & then they're going to do a week-long trip in SW Colorado. There's one guy with *really* long arms who might turn out to be pretty good. I own a catamaran-type whitewater raft with flat decking & loads of room, so they invited me along to row all their gear (if you want *lots* of river time, buy a gear barge - every kayaker that wins a permit will invite you on the trip!). We're figuring on 22 kids & 4 adults, for 7 days & 6 nights, so I will probably be rowing around 3600-3800 lbs ... no prob for The Argonaut Pigboat! :-) MB> * Origin: Code-3 Arlington, Tx.
