On 10 Aug 96 Derek Jay wrote to All: DJ> I've herd that there was an 8 move check mate that works everytime... DJ> Does anybody know it? Please teach me. Sorry to disappoint you, but whoever told you that was either having a oke at your expense or attempting to infect you with their own ignorance. Although it is possible to checkmate in as few as 2 moves with the aptly-named "Fool's Mate", or in as few 4 moves with the misnamed "Scholar's Mate", and numerous related and unrelated checkmates are possible in 8 moves or less, the success of all requires the opponent to defend poorly or blunder. I suspect whoever told you this tale of faulty merit was referring to the "Scholar's Mate", and simply multiplied the minimum 4 moves by the 2 players to arrive at the 8-move figure. The real problem, though, is not the miscounting of moves, but the contention that this pattern "works every time". It may be that your "friend" has no idea how to defend against his pattern -- but that does not mean there is no defense! In fact, the defense is so simple that the attacker is frequently at a disadvantage for bringing his Queen out too early, and will be eaten alive by a more experienced player. The bottom line is this -- a quick win is possible only when the opponent blunders or fails to defend properly. The next time somebody claims they know a sure-fire win, ask yourself this: if an unbeatable sequence of a handful of moves really existed, why would Grandmasters even bother to play? Oh, well, you had said that you weren't on the Internet, so I sent you a private Fidonet Netmail message about a nifty little program I have that provides free Internet e-mail... (I didn't want to mention it in this echo for fear of being off-topic.) I've found out since, though, that in Europe, there are none of the local access phone numbers that the program (called Juno) needs. So one can't use it in Europe without making international calls to exchange mail. :( Chad Butterbaugh From Fort Wayne, IN, USA FidoNet: 1:236/45 Internet: ramandu@juno.com ...
