As for too much variation, the old uniform did have a fair amount, but it allowed for a bit of change from area to area (makes sense in our country to have berets for formal occasions, and various others to be more practical in other areas- ie:the arctic). Anyway-I still think that the Tilly hat should be allowed as "semi-official" uniform (at least). They even amalgamated it into the military's uniform, why not us? Have you ever heard abour Totem Names ??? As you may know, Baden Powell used to be called IMPEESA, what tried to mean "The wolf that never sleeps". Here in Argentina each Scout Group has his Totem Council. And I will try to explain you what this means... When a Scout is about 6 or 8 years old in scouting (antique). And when all the people knows that he is a Good Scout... he is given a Totem Name. The Totem name is formed by an ANIMAL NAME and a VIRTUE. The animal name is chosen by him and the virtue is assigned by the Totem Council attending at his qualities. For example, my totem name is Aguila Servicial (Kind Eagle - I don't know if this is the correct translation from Spanish). I choose the Eagle and the totem Council add my name the 'Kind' quality. Each name has also a defect that is ONLY KNOWN by the Totem Council that every one is supposed to correct... Do you use this kind of names in your countries ??? ... Ahh!
