I too -> do not like seeing the changes in Baseball that you mentioned. -> You are the 1st one of whom I think has the EXACT same thoughts as I -> have. Thank you... I'm glad to here there are other baseball fans out there who also feel the same way I do, that baseball's tradition is a wonderful thing and the changes in baseball in recent years have not been for the better... I mean, I wonder what I enjoy more sometimes: Watching live games on TV, or coming across old films and clips from years ago.... I mean, the only three "moments" in recent history I still can watch again and again are Kirk Gibson's 1988 series home run, Joe Carter's 1993 series home run, and Sepember 6th, 1995, when Cal Ripken played in his 2131 straight game... Everything else, blah.... Though I do have to say that watching Roger Clemens in 1996 tie his own record with 20 strikeouts in a game was something else, especially since I never saw the game in 1986 against the lowly Mariners... But that's about it.... Baseball needs a real commisioner, badly. When they created the position of commisioner in 1920, Kenisaw Mountain Landis was put there as an unbiased third party to act in the best interests of BASEBALL, not the players, not the others, not himself, and not money. What kind of "commisioner" is Bud Selig, who is really "impartial" since he IS an owner! I say: Reinstate Pete Rose, and to make up for his unfair punishment for something he never did, make HIM the commisioner! --- DB 1.39/003705 * Origin: Teleterm Amiga West (909) 984-9580 DS HST (1:218/103) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 234 BASEBALL Ref: F3300011 Date: 02/28/98 From: DEBORAH GIBSON Time: 03:44am \/To: BILL TRACY (Read 0 times) Subj: Harry caray -> I will probably get SHOT down here. I remember him well in 1967 when -> he came to Beantown w/the St Louis Cardinals. Remember the World -> Series . He was suppose to be an indepandant announcer and all he did -> was to get the Red Sox FAN's UP SET. We in Boston -> knew that the Cardinals were a better baseball team but the event -> went to 7 games. The Cardinals won but it wasn't E Z E I can say many great things about Harry Caray, but there is one thing I cannot say: He was unbiased. Let's face it, he was pro-Cardinals when he was with them (probably more than with any other team, since he is from St. Louis), really don't know about the one year in Oakland, not sure about the White Sox (though I know he despised Jerry Reinsdorf, as I think we all do), but was probably biased toward the Sox, and DEFINATELY biased toward the Cubs... It's an unfortuntate reality to look at, especially since Harry is now gone, but it is the truth. He definately had a tendency to kiss up to the team he was announcing for... *sigh* --- DB 1.39/003705 * Origin: Teleterm Amiga West (909) 984-9580 DS HST (1:218/103) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 234 BASEBALL Ref: F3300012 Date: 02/28/98 From: DEBORAH GIBSON Time: 03:49am \/To: BILL TRACY (Read 0 times) Subj: Recent activities -> I doubt you will see Tim Naehring PLAY BALL again. I'm sorry to hear that.. =( I always liked Tim, and really wanted to see his career take off... And definately a nice guy... Carlos Quintana, heh.... -> I think Bragg could be a big help. Don't get my wrong, I admire Bragg.. Gutsy player, plays hard all the time.. I just don't know if I'm sold on him being a good quality player yet, though.. But we'll see.. -> Brett Saberhagen may come back. If he wins 12 games and Dennis -> Eckersley has returned home. He is also an extra pitching coach. Now -> there's a guy who had big problems when he left Boston. He turned his -> life around. But, of course the big key with Saberhagen is can he get healthy?? He reminds me too much of Jose Rijo.. Extremely talented, can't stay healthy long enough to do anything.. Saberhagen hasn't pitched in 2-3 years, and I don't think Rijo has pitched since 1994, yet is paid nearly $6 million a year and sits on the Reds DL all year... =/ Eckersly, if he can remain consistant, will be a huge help, both on the mound and in the clubhouse.... Very good pickup.... -> DG> 1959?? The Dodgers, winning their first Series ever in Los DG> -> Angeles... =) -> THANK YOU. The -> Cleveland Indians are a good example. They were considered a "small -> market" team until they got a new stadium. Now they are considered a -> "big market" team. I'm not against the building of all the new stadiums.. Some of the teams relaly needed new ones badly.. Cleveland was most certainly one of them... Municipal Stadium, or the "Mistake By The Lake" was run down, too big for baseball (74,000 seats), and not really even a good stadium when they built it in the 1930's... I was pleased to see that one replaced.... There was no charm there, nothing nice about it.. Jacob's Field is another story... Wonderful place. I even kinda feel the same way about Camden Yards replacing the older stadium in Baltimore.... But other ones... Like the Twins already wanting a replacement to the 16 year "old" Metrodome.. That's going TOO bar, business or not. Besides, this is one fan that would love baseball more if it was ran a little less like a corporation. And one other one: Replace th Kingdome! Not because it's funky looking, or not "state of the art".. Three words: Falling roof tiles. SAFETY HAZARD!! -> Their problem is not that they built a new stadium, but that the new -> stadium they built sucks. The new Comiskey is not even close to the old one, and besides I kinda saw the old one as a bit of a landmark... On the contrary, I just don't think he's been the same at all since the 1994 strike season.... And mind you, McGriff played in some terrible hitter's parks and still would put up 35 HR a season (like Jack Murphy and the first season in the Skydome, when it was a terrible hitter's park) -> DG> who's playing SS in 1998?? BELLIARD?!?), -> Walt Weiss, unfortunately. *sigh* I think they would be better off with Belliard. At least he would cost them less, and I actually do LIKE Belliard. -> Losing Steve Avery when they did was a very wise thing. How long do -> you want to hang on to a guy who's performing terribly, just because -> he's still fairly young and was once good? Avery's arm is shot, 28 -> or not. Would you rather have him than Denny Neagle? What's to say they shouldn't have left him around as the fifth starter, considering that no matter how "good" the Braves have been in the 1990's, they have never had a fifth starter... Avery may no longer be ace material, but he could be a terrific #5 starter if he ever got it together..... --- DB 1.39/003705 * Origin: Teleterm Amiga West (909) 984-9580 DS HST (1:218/103) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 234 BASEBALL Ref: F3300017 Date: 02/28/98 From: DEBORAH GIBSON Time: 04:04am \/To: TERRY MAY (Read 0 times) Subj: Re: oh, btw -> EG> Hey, the loss of Olberham and Killjoy made ESPN a lot better. -> I disagree.
