However, he's also part of the reason the Orioles weakened their offense (the only aspect of the 1996 team that wasn't broken), which eventually cost us he 1997 ALCS. Miller is no Johnson (of course, he had little talent in Minnesota), but life will go on. What I'll miss most about him is that he as the sense to avoid sac bunts aka free outs. When the Twins make no effort to sign or re-sign players, they don't get them but if they make a decent offer to their players, they keep them around more than you'd expect. Montreal has NO excuse. They have followed the Pittsburgh Pirate plan which meant that they fought their players at arbitration rather than with them like the Cleveland Indians did (Of course, the Indians decided that those hugh profits looked a lot nicer than doing the right thing). They wouldn't let the players make an offer to them that would have been less than what they could have gotten on the open market and their free agents have been allowed to leave without so much as a fight or they're traded a year before they can become free agents. IMnsHO, it's more like how much they are WILLING to spend, rather than what they can afford...other teams watch THEIR budgets also, but are possibly willing to cut their profit margin to get a sustainable drawing roster, as he Colorado Rockies did over the past several seasons. The payoff was a LONG string of home-field sellouts, despite a disappointing season or two... This year, they "let" Galarraga "get away" - primarily because the risk of keeping him on with an inflated paycheck wasn't palatable to the front office...His numbers are too "soft' away from Coors' Field to satisfy the desires of the people who sign the contracts. --- mil failte, caraid * Origin: mil failte from Halls Of Tara BBS 1(303)480-0195 (1:104/447) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 234 BASEBALL Ref: EG300000 Date: 12/03/97 From: BARRY LAWS, JR.
