Unfortunately, he threw a 1-1 fastball to Sandy Alomar, who ripped it to left (the only hard-hit ball of the game off Moose) for a single to end the perfecto and the no-no. Mussina didn't lose his concentration - he whiffed the next two batters to end the one-hitter. It was fortunate that Mussina was at his best, because Charles Nagy was continually betrayed by his defense and let off the hook by the Oriole offense. The Indians committed two errors, and the Orioles stranded 12 runners, but managed three runs for a 3-0 victory. --- Msged 4.10 * Origin: Nerve Center - Source of the SPINAL_INJURY echo! It doesn't SAY that - but the umpire who is best in position to see the play is the one who is supposed to call it. On an infield pop fly, it would be the home plate umpire - especially one that is in the middle of the field. As I said, before, the rule book doesn't say it. But it is implied in the general instructions, which do say, "get your own calls". A pop fly to the second base area, especially with the runners at first and second, would logically fall to the home plate umpire - because his only (or primary) obligation is to keep his eye on the ball. He was asleep - as was the second base umpire who rightfully yelled "infield fly" - belatedly. The call is supposed to be made promptly so the runners know to hold their bases, and the batter knows he's out. When I've seen "infield fly" called (and it has been this year, with the number of runners the Red Sox have left on) - usually ALL of the umpires signal it so everyone knows. --- * Origin: Computer Castle / 20 Lines / Newton, NH / 603-382-0338 (1:324/127) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 234 BASEBALL Ref: EA400000 Date: 06/01/97 From: MATHEW SCHWAGER Time: 05:40pm \/To: ALL (Read 1 times) Subj: goldeyes I want to ask you a couple of questions 1-Do you like the goldeyes? 2-Do get them to sigh balls for you? 3-Do you catch balls? 4-Do you wish you worked there? 5-Who is your favorite player? my answeres are yes somtimes yes terry lee and brian duva please reply with your answeres Mathew Schwager --- Telegard v3.02/mL * Origin: ABACUS BBS Wpg, MB, Canada (204) 256-0049 (1:348/917) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 234 BASEBALL Ref: EA500000 Date: 06/03/97 From: PAIGE MILLER Time: 06:58am \/To: ALAN HESS (Read 1 times) Subj: near perfect -=> Alan Hess took a called strike three for saying to All <=- AH> Mike Mussina retired the first 25 Cleveland batters he faced, and was AH> two outs away from the first perfect game in Orioles' history. In the preseason one of those guys from Baseball Weekly talked about how Smoltz had a good year because he was finally getting the runs that went to Maddux (absurd!). Maddux has finished last every year since he's been with Atlanta and I think that's the most amazing stat of all. I remember when I talked about Nolan Ryan and his lack of run support and David Lentz couldn't believe that Ryan could have went all those years with such lousy support but if you look back even further, Maddux had poor run support in Chicago and he only had one season that could even be considered decent, 4.87 in 89. --- TrekEd 1.00 * Origin: Support Pete Rose and Nolan Ryan for the HOF (1:170/1701) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 234 BASEBALL Ref: EAC00001 Date: 06/07/97 From: HARRY COLEMAN Time: 12:13pm \/To: ALL (Read 1 times) Subj: Atlanta Braves Atlanta Braves once again in 1997 have shown to the whole world that once again they are truly the best team in he national league.. It seems that no matter how many changes are made in the lineup each that they are truly the most dominant team in major league Baseball, and the most consistant team in the ninties, truly no other team in the ninties can compare... Will this Atlanta team return once again to the World Series to once again be disappointed.. Or could they once again be called the best team in the majors, and not just the best team in the natl league.. No other team in either league has amassed such a record in the ninties than the Atlanta Braves.. As they go once again to the big series, who will they face this time. Can any other team come forth an say that they are the team of the Ninties.. Who know, in 1998, they may repeat as World Champions.. But as for now, they will continue to do what they do best, win with great pitching, with just the right amount of hitting.. Only a few superstars to claim mvp's, but still 8-1 pitching by there no 4 pitcher in the rotation is not half bad, and once again some of the better pitchers, are having a hard time getting the runs..
