The worst team name? Undoubtedly, the never-to-be Batlimore Hustlers (ABA). Name chosen to reflect a "ghetto image". Under public pressure, the name was changed to the Claws (crabs = Maryland = claws, get it?) but the franchise folded before it began. In football, the San Antonio Gunslingers had very strange uniforms, and a strange name, and a strange front office (a trailer). Legend had it that a player's paycheck bounced twice, and the 300-plus-pound lineman attempted to physically get to the general manager who tried to escape through the trailer's bathroom window. This team was in one of those leagues (WFL, or was it the USFL?) that organized to try to gain admission for its members to the NFL. Getting back to baseball, and back on topic, I'd have to give the worst MLB modern-era name award to two teams - the Montreal Expos (name with no sense at all) and the Boston Bees. Worst stadium *and* stadium name belongs to the team that had the shortest life in modern MLB times - the Seattle Pilots, now the Milwaukee Brewers, who played in broken down Sicks Stadium. Runner up bad name award went to the Cincinnati Redlegs of the 1950s. --- * Origin: Computer Castle / 20 Lines / Newton, NH / 603-382-0338 (1:324/127) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 234 BASEBALL Ref: E2W00004 Date: 02/26/97 From: BRUCE MARSHALL Time: 12:58am \/To: ALL (Read 1 times) Subj: Tim Laker Does anybody know what has happened to Tim Laker? Quoting your message to Greg Caliri: RM> They both got the name at the same time..... RM> some more are RM> Dodgers Dodgers Stadium It's Dodger (not "Dodgers") Stadium. And if you are suggesting that the team and the stadium debuted concurrently, you are way off-base (pun intended). The team predates the stadium by more than 60 years. RM> Padres Padres Stadium (changed now) There never was a "Padres Stadium". The team, both as a minor and major league franchise, has played at Lane Field, Westgate Park, and their current home, which was originally called "San Diego Stadium". Several years ago, it was renamed "San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium", to honor a former sportswriter who was a major force in bringing pro football and major league baseball to San Diego. BTW, the stadium is about to have yet _another_ name: this week, the San Diego city council voted to lease the naming rights to Qualcomm. For the next 20 years, the new-and- improved name will be "Qualcomm Stadium at Jack Murphy Sports Complex"--quite a mouthful for announcers! The Padres will not play there much longer, though. They hope to get the city to build them a baseball-only park by the year 2000. RM> Giants Giants Stadium (changed now) Isn't this the baseball echo? The only Giants to play in Giants Stadium wear shoulder pads and helmets. The baseball Giants used the Polo Grounds during their tenure in New York. Since moving to San Francisco, they have played in Seals Stadium and Candlestick Park, which was renamed "3Com Park" a couple of years ago. The official box score shows you with three errors in one message, Raymond. But on't feel too bad--at least you weren't on national TV, as Willie Davis was when he made three errors in one inning in the 1966 World Series. ... End of tagline file. This week's issue had an article about the Indians and one of the sidebars talked about personnel and what *may* be their lineup in 1998, if they lose Lofton and gain Ivan Rodriguez. What made me laugh wasn't Rodriguez but this: Even if they chose not to replace Lofton via trade or free agency, they could plug in a player already on their roster, Chad Curtis, and the sum of the parts would be similar to what the Indians have now. It's laughable to think that they can find the kind of players in the market to make up for the loss of Lofton. There's a BIG difference between Lofton and Curtis and the ONLY person who could replace him would be a YOUNG Rickey Henderson. Going into last season, Curtis was .268, .344 and .395 for BA, OBP and SLG and he put up .263, .346 and .393 in those categories. Lofton was .312, .381 and .427 before the season and put up .317, .372 and .446 for the season. Curtis is a career 67.1% base stealer (and has been at 64.2 and 61.5 over the past two years) while Lofton is 82.1% for his career (78.2 and 81.5 over the past two years). The loss of Lofton would impact the Indians as much as the loss/reduced effectiveness of Henderson hurt the Yankees and A's. You can sign all the big-time sluggers in the world and not make up for the gap that will be created by the loss of Lofton. --- TrekEd 1.00 * Origin: Marge Schott, the cure for Baseball Fever (1:170/1701)
