Just paid my bill for the 1997 Red Sox season. Red Sox increased their prices this year... Grandstand seats are now $16 and bleachers are $10. Box seats (and they have "paintbrushed" thousands of seats in Fenway into "box seats" all the way out to stopping short of the bleachers) I think are now $22. How are prices doing in other cities. Their reasons to justify the increase: 1) Reduced TV revenues 2) revenue sharing - they are a "large market team" but playing in a bandbox park 3) increased expenses, etc. And, they didn't say it, but they receive minimal parking revenue (they don't own the lots, and there is ample on-street parking if you're willing to walk), reduced concessions (inner city parks compete with street vendors and restaurants in the neighbor- hood), and even low revenue from their program - the "unofficial" program, Boston Baseball, outsells the official Red Sox program, reportedly. Philadelphia Blue Jays - yes, during WWII the hapless Phillies changed their name for a season. Cleveland Molly McGuires - Don't laugh. Cincinnati Redlegs - the name of the Reds in the 1950s. See, during the McCarthy "red scare" years, it was unpatriotic to be called a Red. But a Redleg, well that's OK. Montreal Expos - kinda weird, considering they were named after the 1967 world's fair, which was over when they made their debut. And the NFL, NBA, and NHL have had worse... --- * Origin: Computer Castle / 20 Lines / Newton, NH / 603-382-0338 (1:324/127) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 234 BASEBALL Ref: E2C00000 Date: 02/07/97 From: ED GRINNELL Time: 09:20am \/To: GREG CALIRI (Read 2 times) Subj: Ticket prices... I can't find my list but it seemed like there were less than 10 cities that were holding firm (One of them was the White Sox). I think that Cincinnati finally joined the list and an increase was probably long overdue. One thing that you can say about Schott is that while she was cheap, she did give her customers more than generous ticket prices. --- TrekEd 1.00 * Origin: Johnson and Norm, then pray for a storm (1:170/1701) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 234 BASEBALL Ref: E2C00001 Date: 02/07/97 From: ED GRINNELL Time: 09:26am \/To: GREG CALIRI (Read 2 times) Subj: Arizona Diamondbacks Greg Caliri was seen kissing Large Marge and telling us: GC> Some other unusual names of teams... It is not a legal catch if it is a rebound unless it hits the catcher's hand or glove first. The fouled ball has to go higher than the batter's head, unassisted, to be eligible to be caught for an out, and this fouled ball does not constitute a foul tip. PM> b) Foul tip, strike two, ball remains alive DS> I'm going to take my chances on #2. DS> The ball never hit the ground, therefore it's still a catch of a foul DS> tip. Since the ball was a tip - not a pop up - the catcher cannot DS> artifically create a foul ball pop-up, and therefore it's simply a DS> strike, and the ball remains live. Actually, there is some debate, but I'm told there is an official MLB interpretation that this is simply a foul ball, that the pitcher cannot catch a foul tip. This interpretation is similar to the one that says the ball is a foul ball if it hits the catcher's mask first, then rebounds into his glove. Well, it ain't in the rule books... Anyway, as a side point, this actually happened in an NCAA game, and the rules interpreter for the NCAA stated that this was a fly ball out. In a high school game, the rule is very clear, the pitcher can indeed catch a foul tip in this circumstance, and so this would be strike two, ball is alive in a high school game. Thus, three different levels of play, three different rulings. ... Road-Kill Sold Here!
