He hits .320 for the season and over .450 for the playoffs! This guy's not a rookie. He's over that now. People talk about Rodriguez being better than Jeter for the rest of their careers, but think again. The difference between .370 and .320 is only a hit (or a walk) every 6-7 at-bats. Jeter's going to beef up and will be knocking a bunch of balls over the fence next year. He's a determined kid who's not afraid of anything, not even Rodriguez. He's better defensively and has a tremendous arm, tremendous range and a clutch stroke. I'm certainly not putting down Rodriguez's ability, but whoever says Jeter will be overshadowed for the rest of his career is WROOOONG.... You have yet to see what's in this guy. Another difference between these two guys? Jeter's in the playoffs and he's helped his team tremendously. You'll see these two young guys competing for the triple crown someday. --- * QMPro 1.53 * ... The subject says it all. Couldn't he SEE that McMichael was throwing EVERYTHING way up in the strike zone? McMichael is one of those pitchers where you can usually tell within a few pitches whether he's on or not, and it was obvious that he was NOT on this game. When he's on, his change falls between the knees and the ankles. When he's off, everythng's up and it's like batting practice for the hitters. What's amazing is that it took Cox so long to realize that he wasn't on. Unbelieveable. I would have yanked him after the triple, and at the very latest after the walk. It was only a matter of time before someone took him deep. I was surprised Gant didn't do it. And going to McMichael without making LaRussa make the first move was just stupid, stupid, stupid, even though it didn't turn out to be a factor in the game. ... 1995 World Series: Braves win! I do not like the man nor do I like the PM>methods he uses. One thing that he has pushed forward on behalf of the PM>umpires is that post-season (and All-Star game) assignments are not based PM>upon merit but rather are based upon a rotation system. In other words, PM>you get a postseason assignment because it is your turn, not because you PM>are one of the top umpires -- and this is in the contract with the PM>umpires association now. This is different than the NBA, NFL and NHL, PM>where post-season assignment go to the top officials only. It would seem to me that if an umpire PM>knew he needed to be rated highly to advance, that would put additional PM>pressure on the umpire to DEFUSE situations, not inflame them. You would PM>get a much higher rating by staying out of trouble. Perhaps major league PM>baseball (when it has a true commissioner) will push this issue with the PM>umpires association. I wonder what George thinks of the latest blown PM>call? DL> Well stated. DL> I think baseball need to address the umpiring issue, and bad. So, what are some realistic suggestions here? We need less confrontation, but how do you reinforce this? We need to fire the umpires with very low ratings for the entire season (but not umpires who blow one call on national television!) and I'm sure that could be done, although I don't know if the umpires association contract allows that. Both the NFL and NBA release low rated officials each year (and sometimes get sued for it). And how do we get the strike zone back into a more realistic shape? I thought the rules were changed a few years ago to try to raise the strike zone, with almost no effect. ...
