Did some Yankee fan spit in Rich Garcia's eye, or hit him in the head with something? Only a blinded man could have missed the fan interference on Derek Jeter's eighth inning flyout, which Garcia ruled a home run that tied the game at 4-4. Why pay six umpires, if they don't do their job any better than the usual four? The first base ump could have blown this call all by himself! If the kid had leaned any further over the field, he'd have landed on Tarasco's head! Garcia missed a similar call on a foul ball in the ninth, but that one didn't lead to any runs. I know, I know - the Orioles also beat themselves with sloppy defense, and a total lack of clutch hitting, but at least they did that to themselves. It's one thing for a fielder to turn a flyout into a hit (see Surhoff and Bonilla) - it's quite another for a fan and an umpire to turn an out into a home run, especially in a league championship series. *adh* --- MsgedSQ/2 3.35 * Origin: Nerve Center - Source of the SPINAL_INJURY echo! RB> (2) Bob Costas said, "It isn't his (the kid's) fault." Well who the RB> hell else's fault is it? I guess a case could be made that he was too young to know any better, but I still wouldn't say it wasn't his fault. What bothered me more about Costas was his lack of guts in describing the play. It was "probably" interfered with, and interference could have "probably" been called. Have some balls, Bob, and say it like it is. The umpire blew the call. It seems the only people not 100% sure about that are you and the umpire. Speaking of the umpire, he compounded the error by saying if he would have saw the replay he would have called it a ground-rule double. What the hell is that? Tarasco had at least a better than average chance of catching it. It should have been an out, period. If these umpires would leave their egos at the door once in awhile and admit they just blew a call instead of trying to justify it or lessen its impact, I think people would have a lot more respect for them. He should have just said, "From my angle it looked like it was out of the park, but after seeing the replay it appeared that it would have probably been caught and should have been an out." Fat chance of that happening, though. ...
