I wonder what his teammates think about his actions. He likely should have been suspended from postseason play. However, the system under which baseball runs is that suspensions for regular season infractions don't apply to postseason games, and that players may play pending appeal (due process.) Alomar didn't make the rules, and it's ridiculous of the umpires and media to all of a sudden demand a change for one incident, no matter how despicable. His teammates don't condone the spitting, and likely feel he deserves to be punished (probably for more than the five games he got), but Alomar is their teammate, and I'm sure they'll stand by him. *adh* --- MsgedSQ/2 3.35 * Origin: Nerve Center - Source of the SPINAL_INJURY echo! Alomar, when interviewed after the game, basically said he believed that Hirschbeck had become a bitter man since his son died (other players apparently share that view, BTW), and that it was a tough thing to go through. The media went off half-cocked, told Hirschbeck bits and pieces, and Hirschbeck rushed the Orioles' clubhouse threatening to kill Alomar (not exactly the action of a stable person, IMO), who was about to apologize for his stupid spitting. Hirschbeck was restrained by the other umpires. *adh* --- MsgedSQ/2 3.35 * Origin: Nerve Center - Source of the SPINAL_INJURY echo!
