The middle guy comes in early when the starter gets bombed, and may or may not finish the game. You are so true about the wins for relievers. I guess, we should look at "blown saves" or protected wins, etc. rather than wins, or specialized types of saves. What do you think about ERA being a factor for relief pitchers??? I'm curious though - ElRoy Face won 18 games as a relief pitcher in 1959 (? I think). Or, what about a relief pitcher with a real low ERA? I guess they have to have a certain number of innings pitched for the ERA title, though. Is there a blown win, blown save, lead held, etc. category we could look at?
