I understand what you mean, but from what I've seen of Rivera live, and on the tube, I think he'd have no problems stepping into the closer role. The situations he's been in this season, it's just like being a closer, only in the seventh or eighth inning instead of entering the ninth with nobody on. In fact, it's probably been tougher than the closer's job. --- The-Box Edit 1.10- PC * Origin: Dunlop Radial Point. Durham, NC. EG> With the exception of the Rockies (and the Yankees), most of that EG> money has gone into signing THEIR OWN PLAYERS. That's not the point! The Royals, to use a small-market team with which I am very familiar, have been forced to trade or lose their own players because they lack the money to re-sign them when they become free agents. Brian McRae is one example that springs to mind. Teams with more money to throw around are able to not only sign those players that they've developed, they're also able to sign players that other teams have developed but can no longer afford. SZ> Compare those teams place in the standings to teams like Kansas City SZ> (18th), Milwaukee (25th), Minnesota (26th), Detroit (21st), Pittsburgh SZ> (24th), New York Mets (28th). So what you're saying is they need to win to make money? But, in today's baseball economy, it takes money to win! Isn't that quite a paradox? How are small-market teams supposed to break out of that cycle? SZ> Granted there are a few overachievers such as Montreal (27th) and EG> Montreal isn't overachieving. Atlanta used to spend money like there was no EG> tomorrow but it wasn't until they put their efforts into rebuilding EG> their farm system that they became winners. That's very true, but you're dodging the issue here. Again, if a team does not HAVE money to spend on the farm, how are they supposed to follow that path to success?
