He should be punished, not coddled. If CS>RP> a pitcher is not ejected for hitting Belle, then it only evens CS>RP> the score for Belle trying to intimidate pitchers by crowding the CS>RP> plate and threatening to charge the mound if they pitch inside. KG> And I guess it'a all right for a pitcher to intentionally hit a player KG> who crowds the plate? Especially if the player is Albert Belle? KG> Belle crowds the plate...the pitcher hits him with the ball...voila, KG> they're even? Since Belle crowds the plate so, it is much more difficult to tell when the plunk is intentional. Crowding the plate demands the strategy of pitching inside. So you get more inside pitches and more HBPs and less way of determining whether the the HBP's are intentional. These circumstances are ENTIRELY Belle's doing. Albert Belle has made his bed, and complains about lying in it. As I mentioned, Jeff Bagwell also crowd the plate with an open stance, just as Belle does. Jeff Bagwell has finished each of the last 3 seasons on the DL with a broken bone in his hand where he was hit by a pitch. At least one of those pitches could have been hit for extra bases if he'd just back off the plate and close his stance a little. Why anyone defends Belle's attitude is a mystery to me. Don't you get enough of that smash mouth, trash talking, in your face B.S. from American Gladiators and UofMiami football? Russ ---- ... I'm not abnormal. I felt that the A's were going into the toilet for a couple of years but that didn't keep me from following the team (and being pleasantly surprised by their early play). The time to support your team is when they're down because it makes the good times seem even better. BTW, the Mets are only 3 1/2 games behind St. Louis so it's not like you can do a lot of gloating (Yes, I realize that they are both in different divisions but if you're going to talk about a team "loosing (sic) a lot", you can toss a lot of stones). --- TrekEd 1.00 * Origin: Striking a blow to purists (1:170/1701) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 234 BASEBALL Ref: DAU00010 Date: 06/24/96 From: ED GRINNELL Time: 06:31pm \/To: RUSS PAIGE (Read 2 times) Subj: Belle Russ Paige was seen kissing Large Marge and telling us: RP> I can't believe that you defend, even advocate, gratuitous violence RP> in baseball. Come on, Russ, even the second basemen, both past and present, had NO PROBLEM with what Belle did. NOT ONE, save Vina, said that there was anything wrong with the play and Vina doesn't have a leg to stand on when he complains. Not only has he done something similiar, albeit to a catcher, he HAD to know that he was going to get it worse from Belle after he pulled the same kind of play on Belle previously. He could have went to second and gotten a double play, IN BOTH INSTANCES, but he CHOSE to do what he did. --- TrekEd 1.00 * Origin: Where did you go, Joe Charboneau? There have indeed been minor changes in the rules since the late 1970s. I understand his attitude is not the best so it will be interesting how it works out in Atlanta. Since they only payed $65,000 for him they got a good buy just so long as they can keep him and the others happy platooning in right field. I guess now they have another decision to make when Walton gets healthy. Yesterday I heard he pulled the same muscel playing in a double A game. Another good player that the Cubs let get away isn't he? I wouldn't want to be the one to say send Dye back down to AAA.
