You quoted the rule, yet you obviously didn't read -MY> it. Directly from your quote above, please re-read the -MY> second sentence. GC> GC> If the catcher steps out of the box, other than to make a play or GC> catch a pitch, it is a balk. If he steps out to fake a throw it's a GC> balk. If a catcher jumps out of the box (intentional walk or GC> otherwise) without the ball to fool the runner, it's a balk. This is nonsense. It most certainly is not a balk if the catcher steps out to fake a throw. I have seen catchers do this many times to attempt to get a runner to move back to a base -- they walk out of the catcher's box with a mean snarl on their lips and sometimes even fake a throw towards the runner. I have never yet seen a catcher called for balk for any reason, and most certainly not for faking a throw while out of the catcher's box. Now here's a play you will see every major league baseball game. No runners on base. Ground ball to the second baseman. What does the catcher do? He runs down towards first base to back up the firstbaseman. He is not making a play, he is just positioning himself outside of the catcher's box. According to your interpretation, he has balked. I have been umpiring for 15 years and I have never heard another umpire or coach or announcer or anyone imply that leaving the catcher's box is a balk, except on an intentional walk.
