The ball PM> falls in fair territory. PM> YOU BE THE UMPIRE The key here is the umpires perception of the runner's intent. If the runner intentionally interferes with the fielder, despite being in contact with the base, then rule 7.08(b) applies and both the batter and runner are out However, I sincerely doubt the umpire would find that the runner intentionally interfered with the fielder. In most cases, I would expect to see the runner remain in contact with the base and not move at all, figuring if the fielder hits me, it's his fault. The best course of action, if you're the runner, is to remain in contact with the base and "freeze". If you try to get out of the fielder's way, it could be misconstrued that you are attempting to interfere, and that is a *bad* thing. 8-) My judgement is for the plaintiff: PM> c) No infraction {g} -= .\\ark =- ... TW> Are you sure? I would have thought that if it hits the batter while TW> he's still in the batter's box, it is a foul ball, since he is in foul TW> territory. The only place that the ball remains live is in inside the diamond and the fair territory in the outfield. Once the ball passes the batter it is a ball or strike. The only question I have is: Does the ball have to reach or touch the catcher's glove? This is a perplexing question. I do think that since a hit batsman requires a free walk to 1st, and a free base to the player occupying 1st, and a free base to the player occupying 2nd, etc. There is no way that the ball should remain live. Since the umpire would see the batter limping and whincing in pain, he would stop play and possibly give him 1st as a hit batsman, negating any extra bases for the runners. One base would be given if a hit batsman is the call. Time is usually called for an injured player. So unless you have a really alert player, time would be called and extra bases would be dependent on a hit batsman. Umpires seldom give extra bases to runners in many delayed circumstances.
