There was a move to reroute city busses to make bikers happy. What is similar about both of these is that I don't see how they are actually "blindness" issues. There is no doubt that we are inconvenienced, though, I am not arguing against that. However, in a city that has as many pedestrians as I have heard they do, there should be other groups upset with this with which we could work to opose this. It seems like another case of the automobile being given preference over mass-transit or walkers. > New York Ciy has come up with the brilliant idea of closing the > intersection to pedestrians on the side of the street where cars > will be turning. If you use a guide dog, put a paw print on the letter as well as your signature. Actually paw prints are probably more appropriate for letters to the Fire Department, especially if you write to one of their Dalmations. Interestingly the Transit Authority of N.Y.C. is introducing 11 rides for the price of 10 and at some point will have daily, weekly and monthly passes or all the bus and train rides you can stand for one fee. I reada book where the T.B.T.A. of NYC had a war with the T.A. and they built highways instead of a second avenue subway line. Friend in New York mentioned one day that effective a few years ago, guess who the t.b.t.a. is part of and answers to? The Transit Authority! In Toronto I would sometimes cross a street by going into a subway station. Sometimes to get to the other side of the street, I had to go through the turnstile, but since blind people in Toronto get to ride the tranit system free, cost was not an issue, just show pass, or more often just say hi to collector, go down stairs and climb up on other side of tracks and head for the exit. Don't think all the collectors know all the blind people in the city, but they get to know the egulars. Take care. ... Actually while in New York City I found most of their streets fairly easy to cross as they have long light cycles and generally plenty of parallel traffic to let you gauge the start of the light cycle. And most of theri streets are little four lane jobs. When i was in Toronto we seemed to have an awful lot of 5 lane an up crossings, and a few 8 and ten lane crossings with four way signals. darn close to the corners from hell itself. ...
