MAGOO CONCERNS From: Julie Dawson Subject: Re: MR. MAGOO CONCERNS Dear Federationists, I do feel negative portrayals of blindness, and other stereotypes, racist or otherwise are important enough to be fought in a respectful credible way. Keeping silent is the worst way to insure that stereotypes continue. Speaking out doesn't always mean a case will be won, movie will stop production, etc. It does mean that people's opinions may be changed, raised or altered if our view is heard. Also I am very much involved with JOB and NFB is extremely active both in promoting jobs through seminars, teaching, job and job search promotion, through books written, through internet and list items etc. I believe that our orga nization can promote many different causes. I also believe that we each should respect the opinions of each other without clouding the original is- sues with personal attacks. The attacks waste more time and promote nega tivity more than movies can do. Julie dawson "Out of many''''one people." MAGOO CONCERNS From: Pete Donahue Subject: Re: MR. MAGOO CONCERNS Hello Julie and listers, For that matter they could put a header on before the movie stating this information. When they released The Boy Who Could Fly, a movie a bout a boy who dreams of flying they used alot of dangerous stunts for making Jay Underwood appear that he was really flying. Before the movie began, and after it ended they placed strong messages explaining that this film was pure fantasy, that the stunts that the viewers saw were done by professional stunt personnel, and told the audience not to attempt these stunts. While I would rather not see this movie be released with Mr. Magoo in his current character the Disney Folks could mitigate the potential damage done by explaining that Mr. Magoo is only a fictional character and that in real life blind persons are competant and self sufficient individuals capible of performing on a basis of equallity with the sighted. If the wanted to they could even show documentaries, or even follow the movie with a film about blind people and how we reaally are. just what happens remains to be seen.
