It contains a sampling of some of the best restaurant's in New Orlean's from a local perspective. The guide is broken into two main sections, then into regions of the city. Address, phone number, price range, and a small informational sentence is given about each restaurant. Warren did an amazing job Brailling the guide, and large print will be abailable also. Feels good to look forward to vacation, especially on a day like toeay, where here in the Southwest of Germany it is raining without interuption. Summer seems to start only on the calendar! My question to y'all does not concern the weather, though: How can I get from the airport to the Raddison Hotel? I guess there was a Braille Monitor article, but I did not get the paper version in time. I'd be thankful for any information. See you next week, Norbert. I guess there was a NF>Braille Monitor article, but I did not get the paper version in NF>time. I'd be thankful for any information. there are 2 basic methods of getting from the airport into downtown New Orleans. The first is by taxi. The rate is $21.00 for 2 people or less and if there are more than 2 in one cab it is $8.00 per person. The most reliable cab companies are: Service cab which I use and there number is: 1-504-888-8294 (888-taxi) or 834-1400. But you can only use them if you are going from Jefferson Parish into Orleans Parish or vise verse. They can't take you from one destination in New Orleans to another in New Orleans. But you can use them for going to and from the airport as the airport is in Jefferson Parish. Other cabs in New Orleans are: United cab, which is the largest cab company in the city, 1-504-524-9606 or 524-8380. And Yellow Cab 525-3311. United has a strange exception to the rule about picking up passengers only in their chartered parish. They can pick up from anywhere and go to anywhere in the state. I don't know how that came about, but that's what I am told. Yellow Cab can only operate within New Orleans just as Service is chartered for Jefferson Parish Yellow is chartered for New Orleans. So either your starting or your final destination has to be within Orleans for Yellow and Jefferson for Service. The other method is a shuttle service called Airport Shuttle. Their number is: 1-504-522-3500 and the rate to a downtown hotel is $10.00 per person each way. There is no discount for a round-trip purchase. You should not have any trouble picking up any of these because both are readily available near baggage claim. But those are the numbers if you need them. Even if you should get an independent cab driver the rate for taxis is set by law so any taxi should charge you the same rate. Airport Shuttle also has a toll free number: 1-800-543-6332. However, they may answer the phone, "New Orleans Tours," and you will have to ask to be connected to Airport Shuttle. They do not require reservations to go from the airport, but they request at least 24 hours notice to return to the airport so they can pick up up from your hotel. So depending on how many people are going to the convention hotels when you get in, one or the other could be the most economical to use. If there are 3 or more people willing to share a cab then the cab is the less expensive way to go at $8.00 a person. Even at 2 persons the rate per person would be $10.50 a person but if you are by yourself then the shuttle is the cheapest way to go. Hope this helps. DDoes the DA Guide indicate this in any way? I'm not sure to be honest with you. I had brailled a few menus for the 1991 convention and made the offer to transcribe more for this one. Committee members in New Orleans were to forward menus to me but I haven't seen any and time is running short. Perhaps Julie Russell can respond better than I can. I know that the main hotel has braille menus but don't know about the other hotels. Most of my time other than work has been spent at the Louisiana legislature where I and others have been trying to obtain an increased appropriation for braille textbooks for local school kids. The state braille textbook depository had returned 70% of its purchase orders unfilled to local schools. We only had $63,000 to spend on braille--$20,000 from state funds and $43,000 from Part B federal funds. This was supposed to purchase braille texts for 94 braille readers in local schools. This campaign really got started because the Baton Rouge chapter of the NFB took an interst in it. About a year and half ago, we had invited depository officials to speak at our meeting but they never came. When the state senate education committee undertook a Look, Listen, and Learn tour of Louisiana, I made sure that students, parents, resource teachers and consumers knew about the hearings. They attended in droves. The braille book issue was presented at almost ever hearing and the testimony made an impression on the legislators. After a few problems in the house of representatives, we were able to obtain an amendment specifically for braille texts. Instead of $20,000, we have an appropriation of $200,000 for the texts and I understand that the Department of Education will retain its Part B funding for braille as well. This means that we may have at least $243,000 if all goes well. Minnesota watch out! We're trying to catch up with you. However, this appropriation is nearing the end of its legislative trek. The session enss early this week. Hopefully the appropriation will remain intact when the house and senate appropriation bills go to conference committee. One never knows in Louisiana politics. I look forward to seeing you soon. Keep your fingers crossed for us.
