AB> The national leadership keeps close AB> track on what happens in state and AB> local affiliates. I live in California. Don't be so sure of that. The national leadership has no real way of keeping track of what happens at local chapter meetings except insofar as rank-and-file NFB members or chapter, state and national officers who are chapter members deem it important to inform national leaders of what's going on at that level. Even state leaders must depend upon local chapter officers to keep them informed of matters which may concern them except insofar as local chapter members tell said state leaders about chapter activities independently of the information supplied by chapter presidents and other officers. Besides, there's no way the national leadership could keep close track of everything going on throughout the whole NFB -- it would be a mountain of minutiae and NFB leaders at all levels have to deal with a good bit of that anyway (grin). AB> In 1978, we had the equivilant of what AB> happened in Hungary in 1956, and AB> Czechoslovakia in 1968. Now *there*'s a loaded sentence if I ever read one. I will not recount the events of that time in California here nor will I debate the merits of various interpretations of those events. Suffice it to say that things came to the attention of the national leadership when disputes arose between the then state NFB president and the affiliate's Board of Directors. Both entities informed the national leadership of those disputes so it was obviously made aware of them. That's a long way from the constant monitoring implied by your message. Obviously our course of action with the airlines wasn't harsh enough because our problems with them seem to be resurging. Also, you say that Bob Acosta justified his taking of money and perks by saying that C.E.O.'s get these perks so why shouldn't he have them. You don't just get perks and benefits just because you happen to be president of an organization particularly a non-proffit consumer organization that is supposed to be bettering the lives of blind people. If that were the case then such a person would be no better than the managers of lighthouses who claim that blind people shouldn't have minimum wage because we don't produce enough to justify it but yet we somehow produce enough for them to have lavish salaries and fringe benefits which after all they should have because they in their own minds are "helping those simpletons who wouldn't have a job if it weren't for us kind-hearted benefactors." true he may live far out, but who forced him to live where there is no transportation in the first place? Even a con artist has to justify their own wrong doing even if it is nowhere but in their own minds. Again, I'm not saying that everything the national leadership does is perfect and maybe we the consumers should re-claim some of our power which we constitutionally still have, but Both organizations certainly had the right and the grounds to prosecute Bob Acosta. I have monitored the mail on this list for a couple of weeks now, and I thank Mr. Andrews for clarifying the purpose of the listserv. It is important that we not reopen old wounds, and to some extent re-invent history. I cannot however leave some of the comments directed at the character of our national leadership unanswered. The history of the attacks on the infrastructure of the organization by persons in California, Washington and Iowa is well documented, and we are not going to rewrite it now. Suffice it to say, that some fourteen or so years after the dust completely settled on the California/Washington situation, we need only look at the tremendous accomplishments of the NFB to see who was right and how far we have come. We ought to leave it to the sore losers, and those who dwell on bitterness and hatred to misrepresent history. To deny Doctor Jernigan the right to the Title of doctor, is to deny the enormity of his contributions to the entire field of work with the blind. No, he isn't God, nor does he expect anyone to "bow down" to him. However, to deny that he is a man of vision, is either due to complete ignorance, or from resentment and out and out hostility. Some of us should really examine our motives, then determine what is in our own best self-interest. The most important thing to the blind of this nation is the only real organization of the blind--the National Federation of the Blind. We should put the organization above all else-- personalities, personal feelings, or any one individual. If we really understand why we were organized in the first place, we will most certainly have a different perspective on activities of the past, the present and the actions of our future leaders. This organization is one, national organization, that issue was settled in the 1960s and again in the 1980s. We have to move forward, and those who want to languish in the past will simply not be with us. Let those who think the organization has not changed in fourteen years come to New Orleans. I think you will be surprised at the dynamics of the activities there. All of the new programs and activities have been overseen by the national State and local leaders from throughout this land. And, indeed Doctor Jernigan, Mr. Maurer, and yes, Sharon Gold too, have worked hard--I dare say to a fault to bring this organization to the level of sophistication unparalleled in the field of disabilities. Let's help them, and quit sniping. On to New Orleans and NFB-Talk. --- * Origin: NFBnet <--> Internet Email Gateway (1:282/1045) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 233 NFB BLIND NEWS Ref: E5L00011Date: 05/16/97 From: BRETT K WINCHESTER Time: 04:10pm \/To: ALL (Read 0 times) Subj: re: Re: Dillon County NFB From: Brett_WINCHESTER@icbvi.state.id.us (BRETT K WINCHESTER) Subject: re: Re: Dillon County NFB Way to go Ben, Dennice and David!!!! But unbeknown to you the california sought help from someone to come infrom National to clean up the mess accosta and his bunch created. I remember it well too as we heard the presidential release of the Board of Directors Meeting that took place in California, and I remember well the behavior of accosta and his Attourney. just a humorus note to this note. We listened to that presidential release while our newly-organized Student Divission in massachusetts was waiting to be let in to our meeting place. In fact, it was Veteran's Day and there was a paraid going on in Boston common. The marching bands, and later the firing of the twenty-one gun salute prompted one Federationist in attendance to shout, "Here comes Bob Accosta and his army now!" WSell Ihad to interject a little nostalga and humor in to this matter, but really, if folks don't like the way our organizationoperates let's discuss it in New Orleans. We can do more about it there than we can on this list. Take care and have a good day. Perhaps if we did not encounter the attitudes among the air lines towards the seating of blind passingers it would stand to reason that just maybe they would be more willing to hire more blind employees. After all, if there were possible hazards and risks involved in the seating of blind passingers on their planes then how could we ever expect them to be willing to hire us in numbers. Perhaps they may think that hiring large numbers of blind persons poses some sort ot sagfety risk of one kind or another. Henced it is necessary to fight discrimination against the blind no matter how it occurrs, whether it involves the seating of blind passingers on the plane or getting them to make their reservations software systems accessible so that more jobs for blind reservations agents are created. soo the next time you accuse us of spending too much money on something such as the air line war take a look at the big picture. If we end discrimination against blind air passingers just maybe one of us could be corpora te president of one of our Nation's air lines tomorrow. peter donahue --- * Origin: NFBnet <--> Internet Email Gateway (1:282/1045)
