I'm new New Year? Isn't that last fall? (Jewish New Year) Or is it coming up in Feb. or March sometime? (Chinese New Year) I always preferred these New Year's celebrations as they use Lunar calendars and I am a bit of a lunatic myself. (GRIN) . Have a happy, healthy New Year's yourself. Sober New Year's eves - now that's an experience only an alcoholic or their family truly seems to be able to appreciate. . The funniest New Year's eve "celebration" I ever partook of was when a friend decided to join my Church - she got baptized on New Year's eve and asked me to speak. I brought up my sobriety and AA and said if anyone doens't believe in miracles, let me tell you that my being here SOBER and speaking about faith in a Power greater than myself on New year's eve is a miracle. I also told them that if anyone had told me ten years before that was where I'd be I'd have told them they were full of something stinky and yucky. THEN at the end of the baptism, during the closing prayer, all of a sudden we all heard this sythetic version of Jingle Bells. You know like the musical greeting cards? well that's what it sounded like. So I ended up holding my breathe and then coughing violently so as not to laugh my head off until the prayer was done. It turned out that one of the young missionary elders (there's an oxymoron for you) had been given a tie that played Jingle Bells and when he bowed his head, he had bowed a little too low (falling asleep maybe? And when I had SPOKEN! The nerve! G R I N !) and set it off, but couldn't get it to stop. It was hysterical, but maybe you had to be there. (So much for reverence in that service, believe me!) . Anyway, that's the most unusual and funniest New Year's I had in sobriety. Maybe it will inspire others on here to share there experiences with humorous episodes on sober holidays. --- TriToss (tm) Professional 10.0 - #66 * Origin: Keystone BBS * Shrewsbury, MA * 508-753-3767 (1:322/743.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 231 RECOVERY Ref: DGS00003 Date: 12/22/96 From: JOAN REA Time: 01:20pm \/To: ROBERT DEBREVI (Read 1 times) Subj: adictions? Oh dear Oh dear Please don't get the governments involved with addiction to tobacco too. All that does is create another industry -tobacco addictions studies and counselling. I well remember in 1970 when the US government gave several millions to a group to study why alcoholics drink to excess. After a year they cme up with a conclusion - Alcoholics drink because they like the way it makes them feel. The same conclusion could have been found in the big book (for $5.00 in those days) with the added bonus of showing how to make alcoholics live and think in a manner that they needn't drink. They'd already like the way they felt! Seriously, it is the responsibility of each person to live his/her life in the manner they chose. If overcoming an addiction is the big problem, there are groups to overcome all of them. All we have to do is go to the appropriate group and do as we are told. Now! Think of this! That statement implies that WE CAN DO THIS! Whoa baby, what power. No longer hopeless, helpless and useless but, now, a functioning member of the human species in improving what humanity is! I spent my day at work as I am sure that some of you did too.
