For the period of May 20th to approx June 30th this echo will be flying blind... Neither Rich nor I have received any mail to our 102 net addresses the last week which means both Rich and I, are cut off again... This leaves me as the sole moderator here until the time that Rich Ward THE Moderator here gets his 102 feed back... But I am packing my 'puter up and moving to the east coast.... hence the flying blind period of time... now a moderatorless FIDO Backboned echo can be removed from the backbone if there is a NOTICEABLE absence of a moderator for longer than 30 days but I am cutting that fine.... so in the meanwhile I plan to implement an interim moderator (Over Rich's objections) the period of time I am off the echo... Who ever heard of going to one meeting per week for a new-comer in AA, NA or whatever? Yet in a lot of these other programs, from what I've seen, that is normal. In fact it is often the case that they go to more meetings per week when they are oldtimers, rather than they are new. . I think that is a bit of a gift we alcoholics and/or addicts have - we can see our addiction and that we are the problem. There comes a point at which denial just doesn't work for us anymore and we know we need 90 meetings in 90 days or whatever. I've got to admit I got a little disgusted with the "anon" programs when the one I used to attend had a person with twice as many years attending it as I had making passes at my husband right in front of me - and this was my observation as well as his and a young man who was also there working with him. Odd that this woman should ask me why he didn't wish to come over there and do yard work etc - she was paying him - without me and when I said, "look, you're under incredible stress already, I don't want to upset you more" she immediately responded with "you think I'm after your husband, don't you? well I'm not!" . That immediate response did more to convince me she was then any of our observations. This woman had only recently - at that time - gotten out of a bad marriage and she was in so much denial of her own codepency that she was chasing every guy around. Including the 20 year old -approximately - helper who was working with my husband. She was even paying over two THOUSAND dollars for a dating service. To me, this left me doubting whether ten years in the program had ever done anything for her. I know this isn't completely fair, but I did notice this alot in the meeting I went to - the only meeting that I could get to - that folks went in and out of relationships, in many cases, not learning a thing, apparently. . So it has left me needing to re-evaluate whether I belong in that meeting. I know Al-Anon can work because we had some "old-timers" in that meeting who had 20 something years in recovery who had a good program - or so it seems. However all of them went to other meetings than that group - meetings I don't have access to as I don't drive. . I know I am taking another person's inventory here; however, I also have to evaluate where I want to be. I have always tried to go to recovery meetings with folks who I want to eventually be like some day. I figure if I go where they go and do what they do, maybe I'll eventually end up like them. But I have seen a lot of people go in and out of this group of an "anon" type program, including myself at one point, who went in and out of one destructive relationship after another - apparently not learning anything from it. . When my schedule changed so that going to a meeting on that day proved pretty impossible, I took that as a cue from my Higher Power that maybe it was time for me to become more commited to Survivors of Incest Anonymous and AA. SiA in particular because it dealt with the root reasons of why I was attracted to chemically dependent and abusive persons in the first place - it was familiar and reminded me of the abuse I'd received from my birth-mother who was a pill-popper (mother's little helpers - the song - could have been written about her) and who was verbally and physically abusive, with some abuse having sexual overtones. I was just duplicating the environment I knew. . After a two year sabbatical from all dating and sexual or romantic relationships, I met my current husband and we have a relationship that is ninety percent good today. So focusing on me and breaking the cycle long enough to find out who I was - without defining myself by light of other folks - really saved my sanity IN sobriety. I am so thankful I did it. Now I know why the moratorium on relationships in early sobriety or after a divorce or other break-up of a major relationship, is so often suggested by sponsors. But I only found out by DOING it - like so many of the suggestions in the 12 steps. --- TriToss (tm) Professional 10.0 - #66 * Origin: Keystone BBS * Shrewsbury, MA * 508-753-3767 (1:322/743.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 231 RECOVERY Ref: D5C00000 Date: 05/05/96 From: PAT WINSTANLEY Time: 09:46am \/To: TIM DILL (Read 0 times) Subj: Re: does local echomail work?
