One thing I do know is that if I took a taste of Scotch, I soon wouldn't be able to taste anything at all!!! I never liked the taste much anyway, but I do respect our different tastes. All I can share about this is to say that I don't know....except that the programme will help with the fear and that you are far more important than any old course or exam which might be charging you stress. PW> Pat When I was newly sober (and for a few years after) I'd smell something, and immediately think of a totally unrelated scene. Like smell hamburgers, and think of a cousin I hadn't seen in years. The memories were powerful and distracting, and I couldn't stop it. As soon as I began talking about it, the fear went away, but it was still mighty strange. Still happens sometimes, but not nearly as powerfully. Someone told me it had to do with something called psychological pairing, where two seemingly unrelated things become paired in the mind. Or maybe, brain damage. :) I've been sending the occasional message here for about three months, but they haven't been getting out. Now, I think they are. Good to be here (good to be anywhere!) I was trying to quote and I messed up... Anyhow, so Tree Walsh was saying about how sometimes she's been in situations where it's been suggested to her that she try another meeting.... And Wes Fitzsimmons said "bin dere done dat...." basically. Just wanted to say it happened to me too. You remember me, Wes, I'm the other one who lives on an island.... So there are only two NA meetings a week here, and about three years ago there was only one. On the other hand there is AA every day of the week. When newcomers come to NA it's generally suggested that they can find a lot of ES & H (see I know what that means now!) at AA meetings when there's no NA meeting nearby, and when I was new here program people welcomed me to either group. Anyhow, some of the AA meetings are closed, and some are open. One time I was at an AA meeting that was closed, here, and it was one of the best meetings I had been to in a long time, anywhere, and I was really feeling glad I had come, and someone from the group took it upon himself to come up to me and really rudely tell me that I wasn't welcome there... although I recognized that this guy was not the admissions officer of the group, and that he had been unnecessarily snippy toward me, and although I generally sensed that no one else there had a problem with my presence, I chose to never come back... (to that meeting)... and I have said a few prayers for this unpleasant and controlling soul who self-appointedly policed the AA meeting there.... I mean, gimme a break. I don't see what it matters what our problem is, when we are talking about the steps and sobriety, I feel that it is much the same, no matter what the program. Because, isn't it that it isn't so much what our problems were but that we are all working toward a common solution? My preference is an NA or other 12 step meeting, because by the grace of God I am not an alcoholic, but I have heard some of the deepest reflections on the steps and sobriety and other ES & H at AA meetings, and I really appreciate being able to learn from others lucky enough to have great outlooks on life and long sobriety under their belts, whatever their "problem" started from. Like in NA they always say "...We don't care what you used..." well, that's what I mean. I agree with you Wes, to keep one's sharing to one's experience with alcohol, but one also has the option of keeping one's sharing to one's conscious contact with God, one's sobriety, one's experience with steps, and so on... I just think it's tough to split hairs over who can come to a meeting. I had just as many problems as an addict as any alcoholic I ever knew. Sure there are categorical differences, but so many addicts are cross addicted, do I have to feel left out because one person at that meeting knew me enough to know that I was never addicted to alcohol.... That isn't to say I never used alcohol.... just didn't use it on its own for its own sakes... anyhow, I am glad I have been to all 12 step programs and am glad others have had similar experiences to mine... Thanks for sharing and thank you to Tree too!
