Dream Hello, Dream Weaver! I'm sorry you're in Juvenile Hall, but really, really glad you've realized you need to quit. The good thing about the juvie system as opposed to adult prison is that you're a bit more likely to be able to get real help quitting if they know you want it. I hope you'll take every shot at getting clean and sober you can get; believe me, you don't want to live with this disease for the first 20, 30, or 40 years of your adult life as a lot of us did. (I was a drunk and druggie for nearly 20 years, and as ways to get through life go, it sure did suck.) RA>-> Dayum, you too? I'm having a second flare up of fibromyalgia, and RA>-> there are times when it literally hurts to breath. I also learned RA>-> recently that our painful muscle disease is one of the complaints RA>-> included in the Gulf War Syndrome. According to the VA Medical RA>-> people there isn't anything they can do about it. Makes a person RA>Not true! A rheumatologist CAN help unless you have unacceptable side RA>effects from low doses or cortisone. They inject the trigger points RA>directly with tiny amounts of cortisone and procaine, and the pain RA>relief can last up to six months. You do have to go to a rheumatologist RA>to get this treatment, though; internists and orthopedists generally RA>either don't know it exists or don't feel competent to do it. Hi Rain, I've been through the injections once... a year ago. And yes, I did have relief. They started them again this year, but I'm also doing the chemotherapy bit, and well... the combination of the two REALLY made me miserable. They've put me on a heavy duty muscle relaxant that I hate to take... My doctor told me to take it and go to bed. Of course having the alcoholics thinking, I took it and stayed up reading. I darn near wound up on the floor. I'm not real sure how I made it to bed. My injections were done in the pain clinic at the VA. Actually it was the people from anesthisealogy (I know that's not spelled right) and took place over period of three weeks. Some of the trigger points never went away, but it was something I could live with. This time it's in all the muscles, not just my back and hips. I've got a big one just under the rib cage in my chest. That sucker hurts! Oh well, from here it can only get better! Joan * SLMR 2.1a * ... The physical spect CG>of the disease that you mention is not the cause but a symptom. Look forwar CG>to your reply. JK>Answered this once, found some more information today. The paper was JK>originally found by me hanging on the wall of the old Alano Club in JK>Burien many years ago when I lived in Seattle. That would have been JK>before the last time I went to Alaska to work, or before 1982. The JK>title is "Dry Drunk Linked to Allergies" and the first part of the JK>paper goes like this: "A casual glance around any Alcoholics Anonymous JK>should convince anyone concerned with the welfare of abstinent JK>alcoholics that attention to diet is imperative. The amount of coffee, JK>sugar and tobacco consumed by alcoholics is staggering (no pun JK>intended) and profoudly affects the physical, emotional, and spiritual JK>aspects of recovery in a largely unrecognized way. JK>The difference in my own recovery when I first changed my diet was JK>almost as profound as the experience of getting sober had been. The JK>phenomenon I'd heard referred to as the "dry drunk" and its host of JK>debilitating and sanity-and-serenity-robbing symptoms diseappeared, JK>leaving me feeling normal for the first time in my life. Sugar had been JK>a part of my diet since early childhood and is one of the mood-altering JK>substances most culpable in the alcoholic/addict's diet. JK>The all-too familiar symptoms of the dry drunk are: JK>Mood swings, depression, insomnia, panic attacks, irritability, craving JK>for alcohol, fatigue, obsessive-compulsive behavior, inability to JK>concentrate, and relapse. JK>Most alcoholics resign themselves to living with these `character JK>defects' and assume that they are a part of the `alcoholic personality'. JK>Not so. ALCOHOLISM IS A METABOLIC DISORDER and alcoholics are quite JK>different from non-alcohooics metabolically. We often forget that the JK>brain is a physical organ and very vulnerable to chemical changes that JK>occur within the body. When the body chemistry is altered, so is the JK>brain chemistry. The brain is the seat of human emotion. Alter the JK>chemistry, alter the emotions." JK>The author of that paper is unknown to me, no name was on it. Just JK>hanging there on the bulletin board for anyone who came in to see it. JK>Since I first laid eyes on it I have added to my own personal knowledge JK>and also my own personal recovery. And I have seen many others who JK>refuse to acknowledge that they are humans and animals with a disease JK>come and go in A.A. Mostly go. JK>There is a reference to a publication in the International Journal of JK>Biochemistry in this paper which says that those treated only with JK>psychotherapy had an abstinance rate of 37.5% while those treated with JK>nutritional concepts had an 81.3%. In short, the chances for recovery JK>more than double when folks are taught remedial diet. JK>Yet, today over 15 years later we are still debating whether or not this JK>is a disease and we are not providing nutritional counseling to all JK>patient who are either addicted or mentally ill. JK>I can assure you that my knowledge of what remedial dietary counseling JK>involes today goes far beyond what was in that paper. If you can't post it here, my P O Box is 682 Worcester MA 01602. In fact anything you could send snail-mail would be most extremely helpful as I can show it to my husband - I don't do u/l and d/l as I don't know how and I answer everything on-line, without knowing how to capture it. So any specific information about how and what to change would be exceptionally helpful. I feel like I work hard at the psychological and spiritual parts of my recovery; however, I see that I have become a compulsive overeater and I feel helpless to overcome it. I also struggle with mood swings you wouldn't believe and I am on Lithium and anti-depressants for it. I also recognize a hormonal component in this, as I expect many females do. I just don't know how to put it all together. I just got out of out-patient day treatment for over a week in a psychiatric facility after a suicidal gesture - not a true attempt - and this is the third time in sobriety that this has happened. I TRY to cultivate an "attitude of gratitude" but something isn't working. I'm willing to try something new. I hope to hear from you soon. I sponsor a Lesbian woman at this time - as well as a couple of other woman - and I have sponsored another one in the past. I know what a blessing a Gay/Lesbian Special Interest group of AA can be. I've been a guest at several meetings and found these meetings to be some of the best I have ever been to - people were so real there, not trying to be what they thought they "SHOULD" *I hate that word* be as good AA members. We have three groups in our city and I've been to two - including an anniversary party for one of the groups. God/ess willing I hope you do get your groups back - it can be a life-line for others who need it's special help. (And I've made many wonderful friends - as well as rediscovering a long lost one that I did not know was either a lesbian or an alcoholic - by being a guest at such groups. I strongly encourage "straight" or heterosexual folks with an open mind not to hesitate if invited as a guest to this type of meeting - it's just plain good AA) Hang in there! --- KBBS vZ.20K (#ARI-00219) * Origin: Dreamer's Lot BBS * Shrewsbury * Ma * 508-798-4188(1:322/758) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 231 RECOVERY Ref: D2R00022 Date: 02/20/96 From: MARGE CLARK Time: 09:02am \/To: TIM DILL (Read 0 times) Subj: Hi ho...
