Hello! Don't know how long my access board has been carrying this echo as it had been a couple of years since I tagged echos on the board. Anyway I found this echo and for the most part it seems to be DEAD. *SIGH* Anyway it nice to know who the ol' Mod'r't'r is. I think I may have sent you a message on the InterNet a long time ago when I was searching for some information on Post_Polio but I'm not sure what the last name was. Anyway it was a Tom. And since I was visiting a friend I didn't get the address posted into my address book. TM> OUR WC5 BBS: HTTP://spacecon.ids.net or TELNET/FTP spacecon.ids.net! I see I'll have to give in to my addiction and surf the net some more. Can't think of a better way to spend the weekend can you! Anyway to get back on subject before I'm chastised for being off topic here. I'm a survivor of Polio. I'm not sure when I first came down with Polio as my dad said I was an infant (he was however for most of my life never around) and my grandfather said that I was old enough that I had to learn to walk all over again. My guess is that since '53' and '54' I was living in a Children's Home that I most likely got Polio then as I do have some vague memories of physical therapy during that time and of wearing the hated brace. I was really having problems with pain and weakness a couple of years ago but I did two things that really helped me. The first one I don't recommend doing however . The first thing that helped a lot was kicking my husband of many years out of my life and divorcing him and although money is tight and there is the stress of being a single parent there is not the constant stress and deprivation of sleep (as my ex thought I was being lazy and couldn't realize that I really did need a lot of sleep) While still married I had to take large doses of pain reliever and soak in a warm tub of water every night just to try to get relief from incredible pain. I still do have an ocassional night of pain but nothing like before. The second thing I did I don't really recommend doing either and that was I quit my job where I was standing on a concrete sidewalk for an hour at a time while I crossed school children in all kinds of weather. And where I live it is not unusual to get temperatures in the teens F or lower. I'm still outside for an hour a day as I do recess duty but I'm not standing in one place for any length of time and if it gets below 15 degrees F recess is inside. And in rain and other bad weather recess is inside. I must admit that walking through the snow on the playground was difficult for me this last winter though. I'm going to try to work things out so that my schedule is only one or two 15 minute recesses next year as the hour long recess is at times hard on me even though the pain and weakness seems to be shortlived afterwards. Anyway as quiet as it has been in here I'm probably just talking to myself. Guess as long as I don't start arguing with myself I'll be all right ;-) though. Beth :-) ___ @-->--> Wanna give Fido fits? Hi Rick To all outward appearance I appear to be healthy and most people do not even realize that I'm a survivor of polio. Sometimes there is a slight limp....especially if I'm really tired. Although I was in an iron lung I do not seem to have a lot of upper respiratory problems and so far I have not had to be on oxygen. In my 20's I was tired all the time and slept often for twelve or more hours but now that I'm in my 40's and have gotten rid of some of the stress in my life I find I have more energy. The last couple of years I've had less pain but I have the feeling that some day all of this is going to come crashing down on me. In the meantime I try to pace myself but often I get frustrated when I don't seem to have the energy to do the things I would like to do. In the meantime circumstances are such that I'm a single parent who has to work part-time in order to get by so I just keep on. Thanks for your informative post. There are 24 more days then school will be out and I'll be out of a job until Fall :-). I have to talk to the Principal before school lets out to see if come Fall she can work things out so that I spend less time doing playground supervision as the lunch hour is just too difficult for me. Especially in the wintertime when I'm out in the cold and tramping through the snow. I wouldn't mind doing the first 15 minute recess, one of the half hour recesses during lunch and then the last 15 minutes of recess which would give me only 15 minutes less recess than I do now. I have to admit that doing the recesses are a lot easier on me than Crossing school children. But they seem to take more energy than working in the workroom or the classrooms. Oh drats! someone beat me to it...so will just have to chomp on a carrot stick. Hope you don't mind a little bit of my humor. If I'm being out of line do be sure and tell me. But I've read articles about how beneficial it is to laugh and smile and my experience is that there is a lot of truth in that. Besides my philosophy is that life is too short to be spent in feeling sorry for myself or railing against the unfairness of it all. It seems so unfair that having once gone through Polio now I have to go through problems with it all over again. The Polio may eventually claim my body but there is no way that I'm going to let it claim my Spirit and my Mind. I'll fight it until I take my last breath. Yes,I'm strong-willed but perhaps that is why I've survived. For awhile the area where I lived had a Polio Support group but it disbanded. It was only meeting four times a year. I went to a couple of meetings but it was so depressing...I've never in my life met such negative people. I know that pain can make it difficult to be positive but still I'm going to try to stay as positive as possible. Anyway I was told at one group meeting that I should quit ice skating, quit hiking, quit biking, etc. All the things that I enjoy right now doing. The woman told me that if I didn't quit that I would end up in a wheelchair like she is unable to even take a load of laundry out of the dryer. I don't know how much truth there is in her advice but I decided to go ahead and continue doing the things that I enjoy until I'm no longer able. At least if at a later date I'm incapacitated my son will have good memories of times spend with me. A friend of mine who is also a polio survivor made a 3,000 bike trip last summer and for me he is an inspiration. I never push myself however to the point of being in pain. I try to listen to what my body is telling me and pace myself accordingly. I have to admit that after riding my bike today I did find myself having to come home and take a nap.
