Get six small angels, feed them good , and keep the water conditions good through filteration, and small weekly water changes. When they get mature, they will pair off, and spawn. Either remove the parents, or move the eggs to another tank with the same water, and add acriflavin (sp) to prevent to much fungus on the eggs. Also have an airstone, and no gravel in the tank for the fry. They will usually spawn on a piece of slate that you could lean against the side of the tank. I have read 45 degrees, but I found that keeping it more streight up works better. They will also spawn on giant val, amazon swords, or simmiler plants. They will also spawn on filter tubes. Water temp 80-84 F. PH-- I have had them spawn from 7- 7.8, and what I've read, lower should be ok. The eggs hatch in 2-3 days, and become free swimming in another 2-3 days. Feed the fry newly hatched baby brine shrimp. These are the basics. Feel free to ask any specific quesions that you may have. MIKE.......... --- SLMR 2.1a #T130 Illiterate? I've seen that too, there is something calming about watching fish swim around a tank. In Florida, last month, at a doctor's office, they had a very nice tank, and it was calming to watch the fish. Well, others here know much more! I'm very new at it with my first 'plant tank' of success. TW> I'd decided this past year, to upgrade our tanks from plastic plants, TW> live plants.. then checked out the pet store, having been reassured TW> the staff, that my choices were good ones, and that they wouldn't ove TW> the tank.. i came home.. TW> Within a very short time, these plants had turned one tank into a jung TW> were multiplying rapidly.. then they began turning brown and died off TW> was like a huge growing spurt, and then they just burnt out.. Grin, in my case, the huge goldfish eat them faster than I can grow them, but now at least I can grow my own! I suspect your tank had a high nitrogen level, but not sufficient nutrients of the other types to sustain the level of growth. Try TetraMin plant sticks? These are special for the fish tank, not regular plant fertilizer (which would kill the fish I suspect). Start with fewer plants. TW> The plants we'd picked were duckweed (to float on the top) and the oth TW> can't seem to recall it's name but) was simaler to the design of the p TW> plants that we'd had in there before.. Long strands, of fine, Christ TW> branches.. Okay, so that sounds crazy.. but it's the best I can descr TW> If I could put pine nettles (but not as hard as pine nettles) on a lon TW> of grass.. you'd have it.. I know exactly the one you mean. I've tried it before but the goldfish eat it up too fast to be worth the bother. I generally go with the type that looks like long spears of grass, mixed with the ones that look like your above type in shape but have little leaves vice needles. Easier to grow IMHO . xxcarol --- Telegard v3.09.b15 * Origin: SHENK'S EXPRESS Norfolk VA 757-486-3057 28.8 Dual (1:275/100) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 229 AQUARIUMS Ref: F2D00008 Date: 02/08/98 From: CAROL SHENKENBERGER Time: 08:46am \/To: SHARON MCCORMICK (Read 1 times) Subj: Re: Joining *** Quoting Sharon Mccormick from a message to Stephen F Barszczak *** SM> Gee, the people in here are so friendly, almost makes me want to go ou SM> and buy an aquarium and fish!! ;-) Smile, if you are new to it and are serious, its an easy hobby and a simple one. Your tank can be as fancy or easy as you desire. Here's my general tips for the kids in the neighborhood just starting a tank. Start small, so it isnt a hassle to maintain. By 'small' I mean a simple tank with simple fish. Skip te really expensive fish and the fancy stuff. Get a 10-20 gallon tank with a bottom filter and a small side filter. (I like the Penguin Classic). If you cant afford both, go with the side filter for the starter position because it's far easier to clean (you just pull out the old filter and replace. Takes all of 5 mins). Get one that handles the same or more gallons than your tank has. Now get a top cover. It can be a lit one, or a simple screen cover. If a simple screen cover, be sure to have the tank placed in a reasonably well lit spot but not in direct sunlight (which can get too hot for the fish in some areas, and will cause algae to grow making cleanup a hassle). Get a small bag of gravel, in a color to match the decor of the place for your fish. If in doubt, buy less than you think you need and get a neutral tan color. Plants? Little hidey holes? Consider some of the simple things you see at the store or some freshwater driftwood perhaps. Saw a lovely arrangement made from 'garden rocks' glued into a castle with aquarium sealant once! (River rocks, smoothe type). Now for the fish. There are 3 primary 'starter' types. Goldfish, (caution, they can get very large! Mine are almost 12 inches long. Also you wont be able to add other types of fish to the tank except for catfish and plecos etc). Guppies- wonderful for kids and parents alike. Live young. Warning, they eat their own fry which can upset the younger tots. Mixed simple tropical- warning, this can be expensive if you let it be (advise starting with just a cloud of Tetra's). Depending on the size of the fish, tells you how many to add. I'll assume a 10 gallon tank. (For a 20 gallon tank, add half as many more fish, not double!) 3 goldfish or 7 guppies or 15-20 tetras (if Neon/Rainbow, go for the higher number, if larger types go lower) Setup the tank, but add no fish for a week. Add 1 or 2 fish a week until you get to the recommended levels. Add fish by placing the unopened bag, in the tank to acclimate gently. Open it about 1 hour later and let the fish swim out. Use 'stress coat' to the recommended levels and you wont suffer many losses. Fish food: go with the flake type. Several good brands. Get the one recommended for your fish type and dont overfeed (which causes both a mess in the tank and possible death of the fish). Smile, enjoy. I've had fish tanks since I was about 8. Started with goldfish and have loved them ever since. Now I have a 70 gallon tank with goldfish, a 20 gallon plant tank, and a 3rd tank with a stray guppy left to me by one of the neighbor kids to 'heal' and forgotten when they moved... xxcarol --- Telegard v3.09.b15 * Origin: SHENK'S EXPRESS Norfolk VA 757-486-3057 28.8 Dual (1:275/100) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 229 AQUARIUMS Ref: F2D00009 Date: 02/08/98 From: CAROL SHENKENBERGER Time: 08:50am \/To: DWAIN BOSSOM (Read 1 times) Subj: Re: Love my betas *** Quoting Dwain Bossom from a message to All *** DB> I love my Beta Splendins (sp?)
