Shubunkins are just another variation on the standard comet type goldfish. The body tends to be more Koi-like as does the finnage. The tail can be somewhat elongated. The ones I've had all grew to over a foot before I had to sell them off. I don't have a pond,so tank space got cramped. Otherwise, care is the same as with any other goldfish. Yours will soon outgrow the tank you have him/her in. Your options would be to sell/trade it back to the store or sell it to a pond keeper. I doubt I'll ever have a pond. I live in the city and have a very small ("postage stamp") yard. A pond would take out the bulk of the back yard. Are the algae cleaners you have possibly bristle-nose plecos? Your description would fit several species of those. --- Spot 1.3a Unregistered * Origin: (1:2613/323.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 229 AQUARIUMS Ref: EAZ00000 Date: 06/28/97 From: CHRIS PHILLIPS Time: 09:13pm \/To: CAROL SHENKENBERGER (Read 1 times) Subj: Coi/Koi? >Might add, ponds are not a good option here. Perhaps later. See, this is the 2nd year after buying a new home. Not as tight as the first year, but tight enough. I just cant justify spending more than 20$ to fill a tank with fish at this point. Got a deal on some guppies. Neighbor's kid's tank is teeming with little fry. Yes, most wont make it, but I'm game and if I dont take them, the parents will just eat the little ones due to overcrowding. Bought some special food from the pet store (forgot to check on the goldfish!) and more live plants for the 'plant tank'. Total since the fish were free was 20$ food and plants. Not bad. In a few weeks, I should be able to tell if any of them will make it ok. Alternative was 20$ plants and 20$ fish so this was not a bad deal (grin). Now have 3 tanks in operation. All in one 'wall unit'. 1 is the 70 gallon goldfish tank, 18 goldfish (one jumped free and became catfood in the night), 2 ?plecos? 1 catfish. Sparse on live plants as they eat them. 1 tank is a regular 25 gallon type, neon tetras and some angelfish (and a few more plants), and the 3rd is the matching 25 gallon plant and baby guppy tank. I have one other spot I am eyeing for a 'sick tank' in the computer room. Perfect for a smaller 10 gallon tank. Put some plants and sanils in it when not in use for 'sick fish' and all should be well. xxcarol --- Telegard v3.03.b06 * Origin: SHENK'S EXPRESS Norfolk VA 757-486-3057 28.8 Dual (1:275/100) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 229 AQUARIUMS Ref: EBC00002 Date: 07/06/97 From: DON BELL Time: 03:32pm \/To: ALL (Read 1 times) Subj: Female Guppies Anyone know where I can acquire a few female guppies? I have asked all the fish stores in my area and none will part with just female guppiies. I have a tank with all pairs of guppies in it, but the females are harrassed all the time by the males being the same amount. I was told to put in a ratio of 2-1 females to males, but am unable to purchase them in this area.. Any ideas? Mine are the fancyy ones, not just the common guppies. Wish I knew someone in the area with an overcrowded guppy tank, as I am afraid the constant harrassment will result in the death of the females! --- VFIDO 7.12 * Origin: The Black Bass BBS from Greater Downtown Moonachie, NJ 1:2604/124) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 229 AQUARIUMS Ref: EBC00003 Date: 07/06/97 From: ROBERT RICE Time: 12:15am \/To: CHRISTINE LABONT (Read 1 times) Subj: moderation I think the future is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO bright for unknown native species but a bit weak for the fdo net....As for you I'll send you my latests article for tFh................. --- Maximus/2 3.01 * Origin: Emerald Coast/2 (1:366/47)
