I dont believe my 9600 connects are 100% error free with either modem... Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Dan ... Nope. It increases the throughput by using fewer bits (8 rather than 10) to represent a character. The bits are sent at exactly the same speed with or without EC. -> A "perfect" channel, using 8 bytes per char and no packet overhead -> (which, of course, is not possible) would give 33600/8 = 4200 cps, -> somewhat less than the 4500 cps claimed. MF> What would be the max speed for a 28800 connection rate? 28800/8 less overhead. About 3400 cps or so. -> Similarly, Zmodem or YModem-g won't change that. mf> Well, I can tell you, for sure, that YModem-g gives me a mf> 50-100cps performance edge over Zmodem. Sure. But it _can't_ improve the number of bits the modem can handle in a second, can it? It improves throughput by eliminating the ZModem overhead - at the expense of Zmodem's error detection and recovery. If you get a CRC error with YModem the transfer is terminated. TTFN. Rick. I run a two line BBS system here that I've had online for about 7 years now, and I run two 33.6 USR Sportster modems on it. I've been having some intermittent line noise problems here and have had the phone company check the lines, with no luck. Mostly what I notice here is people across certain local prefixes have more problems than callers from other prefixes, with line noise. My question here is: Is there some device I can use to condition my lines and/or alter the db level to improve upon the lags and loss of carrier my callers are getting? Is there something I can have the phone company do with the db level that would help? Or would they even do it for residential phone lines? Any help would be most appreciated. -- .\\ark --- TriToss (tm) Professional 11.0 - #80 * Origin: Mark's House BBS * Wichita, KS (316)524-1289 (1:291/25.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 105 HIGH SPEED MODEM Ref: E4F00009Date: 04/10/97 From: DAN CLOUGH Time: 03:43pm \/To: WAYNE CHIRNSIDE (Read 6 times) Subj: OPINIONS, MODEMS >DC>Get the USR Sportster, or the USR Courier if you can afford it. Hmmmm. Funny, they've always treated me very nicely. While there have been some problems with some of their modems in the past, those are ironed out now, and a new modem purchased now should work just fine.
