Some one said that the gravel, in a tank, naturally causes the PH to AW> MC> go to the Alkaline side. As if it were made of limestone. AW>Answered your own question there. It depends on what it was AW>made of. If you pulverise a calcarious rock to gravel, yup, AW>it will push your hardness up, and your pH to the alkali end. AW>If you use a 'gravel' from, say, a granitic source rock, (ie. AW>mainly silica), you will /not/. AW> MC> I don't know what rock gravel is based from. AW>So check. I would guess that commercial gravel is stable in regards to PH. Even if it were limestone, it would take too long, to disolve, to have an affect on PH. AW> MC> Can't remember. Is 7 or 6 neutral? AW>A pH 0f 7.0 is neutral. Thanks! AW> MC> In general, is it better to be a little on the acid side? AW>Depends what you intend to keep. Think about it. If you want to AW>keep a species, which, in the wild, lives in soft, acidic water, AW>shoving it in hard alkali water is not going to do it any favours. It gets a little more complicated when your trying for a community tank. Some might not thrive in different acidic conditions yet can tolerate them. AutoCats die in hard water. AW>Do a little research. Where does the fish come from? What is its AW>natural temperature range? What is its natural pH/DH? Still water AW>or moving? This *is* my research. With people like Sam and yourself around, who needs a book? :) AW> MC> 3. What do you think of boiling active charcoal to increase it's AW> MC> efficiency? You can't let it dry afterwards though. Keep it in water. AW>To re-activate charcoal, you really need to bring it to red heat, AW>and keep it there for a while to drive off all the crap. Unless AW>you are really skint, forget it. I thought so. I needed reasurance. I like to keep an open mind even if it sounds so wrong. What I am searching for is a minimal care tank. I don't mind keeping my tanks serviced but I don't want to make too many stops at my doctors office. Thanks for the input, Marty. AW>All the best, Adrian... I've started trying to switch the feeding place and time somewhat, but that's hard with school and two feedings a day. --- Maximus 3.00 * Origin: Voices From Within (1:153/220) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 229 AQUARIUMS Ref: DDX00004 Date: 10/01/96 From: KEVIN NUNN Time: 03:07pm \/To: ALL (Read 3 times) Subj: Back into Aquariums... Hello Everyone.. I have decided to get back into "fish-keeping" again after being out of it for about 8 years. I got rid of my all my tanks, ranging 5 - 75 gallons, all equipment and now I am pretty much starting from scratch. So, if anyone could offer any suggestions on tank sizes, filters, etc etc or any new technologies that I might want to take advantage of. I am not looking to get into what i had before, probably just 1 20 gallon this time, maybe 2 and it will be strictly fresh water. As for fish types, I always enjoyed Angels, but not sure what I will end up with yet, so suggestions on a good population would be appreciated also. I am not looking to breed, just mainly take care of and enjoy them. Thanks in advance... They prefere the higher temps, and are nicer fish anyways:) as for kuli's I'm not sure about them, but I've had some before and I seem to rember that they were a fairly normal fish (i.e. temp range of 73-76 farinheight....) so they might not be a good idea.
