No more oscars for me. Enough is emough. No problem. I currently don't have one either. About a year ago I had to take down my 55g due to moving and all I had running was a 20g with gouramis. I just put my 55g back up and its totally community right now. The 2 oldest fish I have are 2 silver dollars that have been in every tank I've ever owned, starting with my original 10g when they were about the size of a dime. At one time they shared the 55g tank with my oscar. --- WILDMAIL!/WC v4.12 * Origin: * The Cheyenne BBS * (610)789-6683 - USR v34+ (1:273/40.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 229 AQUARIUMS Ref: DCU00007 Date: 08/23/96 From: BOB BRINSFIELD Time: 10:26am \/To: JASON BERGMEIER (Read 2 times) Subj: Cichlids Yeah, I have a smaller Albino Tiger Oscar right now. If you want a realy tempered fish get a Red Devil. I had a male in a 55gal. When he was about 17 inches he swam through the glass. A friend was teasing him. There was so much pressure on the glass from the water that when he hit it the aquarium shatered. I have a friend that has a red devil. It seems to like attacking everything in the tank. His problem is that he shares a tank with a larger Jack Dempsey. Not all Oscars are bad tempered though. i have had a few as peacefull as can be. Jason To be honest I've never met a bad tempered Oscar. I've heard they are different when kept in pairs though. I've only kept them singularly. He was a great fish and I know eventually I'll be getting another. My problem right now is that I can only have one tank due to space limitations. I just set the 55 back up and took the 20 down. The other thing is I've decided that I would like to get a fire eel so I'm going totally community for the time being and I don't think an Oscar would fit with the theme of the tank. Too many smaller fish. --- WILDMAIL!/WC v4.12 * Origin: * The Cheyenne BBS * (610)789-6683 - USR v34+ (1:273/40.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 229 AQUARIUMS Ref: DCU00008 Date: 08/23/96 From: CALVIN LITTLEFIELD Time: 11:30pm \/To: JOHN DAILEY (Read 2 times) Subj: Re: A great new area... f -=> Quoting John Dailey to Calvin Littlefield <=- > Try your local used book stores, especially the warehouse-style ones. Mine just wouldn't stay JD> anywhere near the bottom, and I wondered :) I gave up on trying to keep the stuff planted since the guppies and plecos nibble on it and the lead twities they bunch them together with are nsightly. They seem to be doing fine just floating there, but if you have too many fish nibbling at them, they will turn into little. brown nubs in short order. Fortunately the stuff grows like a weed and that's because- surprise urprise- it is a weed! Most of it is collected in the wild or raised in vast private ponds and processed to be of equal length, but I have gotten the stuff from stores with snails (3 diff, kinds, still have them) and hydra (they got some of my fry before I discovered them; destroyed that batch and all the little nasties with it!) so I always check new stuff out thoroughly before I put it in with my fish. When I get wheels under me again and have the room to play around wit this stuff, I plan to do some collecting myself and see what I can find. He has me timing my annual clean-up during the early spring so he can get the best waste water when he's lanting. Last year he had a beefsteak tomato that was almost 10 inches across and firm as a football! His icicle radishes (the long white ones) which are normally anywhere from 4-8 inches long were almost a foot! Annd all darn tasty too. get a little trade for my waste water. :) (This is another reason I want a house...with a small area for a graden.)
