I breed all kinds of cichlids, south american and african. I myself have bred oscars alot and they are my favorite fish. I have 5 right now. 2 are a couple and the other three are just buddies, They are all over 12 inches long and love to destroy my tank(s). One time one of them jumped out of the tank and hopped all over the floor knocking over plants, filters you name it. Are your's this fun to be with? I hope I haven't upset you with my questions. You see, I had (Thank God, they're gone) two very large & very aggresive oscars & they gave me & my hubby nothing but problems. They killed almost all the fish in the tank (Except the placo) They jumped out of the tank everytime they had a chance & they seemed to like eatting (biting) my husband's fingers every time he tryed to fix something in the tank (20 Gallon). They were always fighting & I'm surprised they didn't kill each other in the middle of one of their fights! Don't get me wrong, I love fish but I've had alot of problems with them. Have you ever had silver dollars, they start the side of nickels & died the side of dollar coins (& I don't mean Susan B Anthonys). One line pin-cats will also kill all your fish, actully the first time I had bought oscars, they ate them. So, I went out & bought larger oscars who in turn ate them. So, you see, I've had alot of problems with fish & thats why I'm trying to find out what kind of fish to get this time (NOTHING agressive) Once again, I hope I haven't upset you. My husband took care of them & they liked to bite his fingers. I'm not saying they aren't for everyone but I had two VERY large oscars in a 20 gallon tank, could that be the reason they were so agressive? Could I please get some feedback on this. Please if you have any info to contribute, or corrections, suggestions please let me know! Thanks! Red Bellied Piranha Keeping By: Mark Mehlick 6/11/96 Well for one thing Piranhas are definitely way to overrated as far as being mean killers that will devour you in seconds to the bone. Well they are definitely dangerous but the less of them you have, the less dangerous they are (to you). Piranha are schooling fish, the more of them, the better they like it and the more confident and non-fearful they are. Whereas a tank with just 3 of them, they will be relatively non-threaten. If you were to stick your hand in that tank of 3 (piranha) they would swim away from it. Now try that in a tank of 100 piranha and you'll be pondering as to why you were so stupid to do that all the way down to the hospital in the ambulance less one hand. Water Temp: 78-82 degree's Fahrenheit acceptable range <80 is perfect, they love & flourish in it> What fish takes well to being switched over to a new or another tank? None really and piranha are no exception. It REALLY stresses them out. However once they are settled they are very well able and adept to changes and being able to accept them in that tank (i.e. water temp change). Be prepared for some injured fish. Piranhas are very aggressive and be guaranteed that at one time or another soon enough they each will have had a fin bitten off or a chunk of scales missing. Not a bad idea to have some of that salt for freshwater fish in your tank all the time (for piranha or any type of fish). Food: Brime Shrimp - younger, smaller piranha, older/bigger you can feed them goldfish, any kind of meat, I've even heard of dogfood working When piranha are stressed out they will lay at the bottom of whatever there in at a slanted angle (usually). Also they sleep like this. So don't freak out when you buy your piranha and they look like there dead in the bottom of the bag. Piranha are more of a bottom dwelling type fish. Keep this in mind when setting up a tank for piranha, to get a tank that is high (if possible). Piranha only really go to the top of the tank when food is dropped in. Injured piranha in a tank by another piranha can be expected to be eaten by the healthier piranha in that tank if it's a pretty serious injure. Now injures like a fin missing (because it was bitten off by another piranha) or a damaged fin are very common from them being aggressive with each other and will recover with haste and no problems at all. In short, keeping Red Bellied Piranha will be a very interesting and educational experience unlike any other kind or type of fish will provide. It's amazing as to how they live together in constant fear of one another and yet flourish and need each other. Now all that is left is for you to go out and get your own piranha. --- MacKennel 2.6 * Origin: The Hobby Shop - (314) 429-2456 - ST Louis, MO (1:100/587.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 229 AQUARIUMS Ref: DCN00005 Date: 08/17/96 From: JAMES WAGNER Time: 08:06am \/To: DEBBIE PACREM (Read 3 times) Subj: PH Level...&... You won't want to buy a discus and put it into water with a PH of 7.6 it prefers a much lower PH. Also, anglefish and discus can't be kept together unless you buy a product that kills the parasites on the anglefish, and furthur more the discus require temperactures for healthy living that most of your other fish would find very difficult to survive in, especially the plecos.
