I know that in my area the fish are brought up from SB> Detroit, MI, which is a 2 hour trip from my city. Other than that, SB> I've heard they come from giant fish farms in Florida. As far as I know, most neons sold are live captured and shipped to the fish farms and other fish distributors for shipping to all parts of the country. Those that survive. Saw a show on DIscovery or one of those channels, that showed the capture, sizing and shipping from South America of neons, discus etc I'd say, by the sound of it, we'd be lucky if 20% of the captured neons make it to the fish stores customers. --- ViaMAIL!/WC5 v1.00c * Origin: Xanth BBS - Wildcat - Sacramento CA 916-264-1826 (1:203/996) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 229 AQUARIUMS Ref: DCJ00007 Date: 08/14/96 From: GREG KUBEJA Time: 05:30am \/To: MARIE CASALASPRO (Read 3 times) Subj: Re: Cichlids MC> Welcome to the wonderful world of oscars! Well I have had my Cichlid for about 3 years and I origionally had 4 of these "little creatures" came home one day and there was only one left. (this is back 3 years ago) the one is still alive and very agressive, attacking the algae eaters when ever it can, but to no avail. The only thing it does that gets me ready to "put it in a frying pan" is takes the gravel from the middle of the tank and scoops it up in its mouth and takes it to the top of the corner of the tank and spits it out, i now have the Grand Canyon in the iddle of my tank, then it proceeds to try and knock off the top tank cover off, i have to keep the phonebook on it to keep it shut. Except for that I have had no real problem with it, --- Renegade v5-11 Exp * Origin: |04F.F.I.A. As to a buildup of "minerals" - do you have special fish in your tank which convert protien (food) into calcium? Maybe you could use the fish fecies in your water softener if you can find the right blend. :) Chris I have to disagree with you here Chris. I've tried monthly and bi-weekly changes and for the best results I found weekly changes the best. --- WILDMAIL!/WC v4.12 * Origin: * The Cheyenne BBS * (610)789-6683 - USR v34+ (1:273/40.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 229 AQUARIUMS Ref: DCJ00011 Date: 08/14/96 From: BO LAU Time: 01:51am \/To: JOE RANNEY (Read 3 times) Subj: Wet/dry systems > I think you are are the right track. Just a thought here, I personally don't own a W/D unit, but would a really big dense sponge placed in the sump area be a "cultivating area" for the type of bacteria to convert NO3 into NO2? I'm not really a fan of the reef tank that looks like a wall of rock so I'm using the Jaubert method which from the top of the sand on down looks quite hideous! :) My tank is starting to develop these tiny organisms that are multiplying like crazy! They look sort of like rotifers with two flagella on the rear and are about half a millimeter long. They were coating the glass and are now swimming around the tank. My brittlestar loves them! as do the occasional damsel. Do you think they pose any health rish to my fishes? Inverts? -bo /s ... Well, whenever I would approach my Oscar tanks with any kind of food, be it pellets, raw fish, feeders, worms, etc. They always leap out of the water and into my hands . One time they made me spill a container of fresh tubifex worms all over my clothes and on the carpet, Imagine a wriggling black mass on your carpet!!! Now I approach the tank walking backwards with the food hidden until the last moment :) -bo ... This copy of GEdit has been unregistered for 37 days. --- * Origin: The Aquarium BBS - Fishies Unite!
