I put the fish in its tentacles, then it brings it to it's mouth, where it eats it. the dead fish completely disapears inside it. then about 10 to 20 minutes later, it pushes it back out again. After another 10 to 20 minutes, it will sometimes pull it back in and then spit it out again. Does anyone know why or if this normal? It's main reason is to get rid of the converted nitrites and nitrates that are the end products of incomplete biological filtration. The only way you could gnot worry about that, would be if you had alot of plants, that all were growing well, and a very good filtration system, even then, you'd have to constently check your systems health. A 10% water change ensures healthy fish, and you never even have to test the water, you can rest assured that it is safe. --- Maximus 3.00 * Origin: Voices From Within (1:153/220) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 229 AQUARIUMS Ref: DCI00000 Date: 08/09/96 From: ADRIAN WORLEY Time: 11:41am \/To: PHIL ARNOLD (Read 3 times) Subj: American tanks. Hi Phil, PA> Volume is the primary factor, but "visual" PA> aesthetics are also becoming a factor. One of the PA> latest tanks over here is the "Eurostyle". It is PA> about a 47USGal capacity, rectangular backed, but PA> the front glass is "bowed" outwards in a curve. PA> Think of the letter "D" on it's back. My very first 36 inch tank was like that! Got it in about 1967. Angle iron frame, coated with white nylon. 36 inches long, 12 deep and between 12 and 15 inches wide. Odd thing is, I genuinly can't remember what happened to it! Guess I must have sold/swapped it at some time. I guess your ones are all glass? PA> That's also a reason between the 20 high and long, plus flat-back PA> hex, and assorted other shapes. One of the better PA> ones I've seen recently, though, is a "corner" hex, PA> which is really a five-sided tank. Think triangle PA> with two points smoothed off. It's somewhere PA> around 87USGal capacity, and ~30 inches deep. I PA> think the unusual shape would lend itself well to a PA> free-form reef. Hmmm, we have had these hex/corner hex type things for a good few years now. I've never had one. I guess if you've got the right spot in the house there okay, but I find the multiple images you tend to get rather disconcerting! All of my current tanks are rectangular, with the back, and at least one of the sides painted black. I guess its down to personal taste. As an aside, something else I've noticed in the echo, is that VERY few North Americans seem to use Eheim gear. Would you say that is true? I have been bitten by a piranha, so has my mothers X husband... about 18 yrs ago I bought my last piranha.. I have had 7 of em total. I wasaround 14-15 yrs old... I would buy them by the pair and they might live 0.5 -2 yrs old... I did not know about amonia back then and bio filtration... once i changed the water and forgot to add clorine remiover and they was dead in the moring.. My last one got up to about 8 inchs... he lived for about 8 yrs too. I did not take care of him very good... ya know between 14 and 22 or more like 13 and 20 .. I didn't feed him well the last 3-4 yrs ay all... I moved in with friends and he came and was ignored... back when he was like 5 inches long, I was cleaning his tank he was nervous and kept darting all over scared. so I though I'd chase him with my hand, and he kept running and running as my right hand chased him...well after a few minutes he suddenly spun around and clamped my index finger....my reaction was quick to pull back hard... there was blood, but I did not give him time to take a chunk out.... I even pulled some of his teeth out... my hand was not hurt much, but I was worried about his teeth... lord and behold he grew em back in less than 4-5 days.....about a week befopr this he killed and ate his tankmate piranha... they never got along, my last two pairs befor got along like twins..... well, back when I was around 20-21, My stepdad decided he was gonna clean the tank, he had his fishen buddies over, the 30 gal was in the dinning room, playing tough guy we neted it and grabed it with his hands, somehow his finger was by it's mouth and "CHOMP", I was not there, but my mom told me what happend, he was screeming, flopping his hand around trying to get it off, it took a chunk out of his finger, he had to have stitches,, and had it wraped when I got him and the fish was back in the tank... but it flew up against the wall as he was shakking his hand and I assume it had internal dammage because it died a week later, it did not eat after it either..... about 5 yrs ago I got back into fish, and have been raising Cichlids.... they are meaner than piranhas, Africans, Jack Dempseys, Red Devels, Convicts, Manenquese, etc etc. I don't care about piranhas anymore, but I thought I'd share my experiance with em.... Piranhas are a timid fish, but they will bite when they get cornered or run out of energy to keep running...or if your are macho enough to stick your finger in thier mouth when they are in your hand.... later * SPITFIRE v3.51 Surf To http://www.ivy.tec.in.us/haute/thaute.htm --- FreeMail 1.10 alpha-3 * Origin: Ivy Tech Online * 28.8 DS * FidoNet! I have a 55 gal a 30 gal and a few 20's and 10's,, my 55 had Africans in it, they all killed each other And I was left with a dark blue Zebra Mubua...a mean mean fish, grew to about 7 inches total in 3 yrs..... he died in May of 1996, i last changed his water in June of 1995, The only fish in thier was him, A 9 inch pleco, and a 3 in Black Tetra.... he all a sudden died... I was wandering if I let it go too long, The 55 he was in has a Wisper % 400 GPH with bio media stuffed in it and a sponge on the inlet to keep it cleaner, the water has always been Cristal clear... I assume the Nitrate levels got alittle high... I had some plants in there, but they ended up being a salad for the African... I have had tons of Africans, Lombardois, Red Zebra, powder Blue Zebras, Haplicroims Venustus, and a few Haplicromis Electric Blue Haps...(a very Bright Blue Fish, probably the most colorfull freashwater fish on earth bar none) that grew to 6-7 inchs...one grew to like 8 inchs, he was psuedetrophes Troephes...... I desided to just raise one african since they kept killing each other when they got over 5 inchs...... but the overtime I was working on my last job and time spent with girlfrend and baby.. well, I just fed em........ I bet he'd lived over 6-7 yrs if I had took care of him better.... he was the meanist fish I'd seen.. and I have has some mean Red Devels.... I have a 11 inch Manaquese right now, he will bite you in a fraction of a second, he will run into the glass tryingto bite you, he will flip out of the tank to try and get your hand......NOTHING can live with him,,, he'll kill it... once I took him and put him in the 55 gal from his 30.. he was with the African... they fought, and the African would bite his side and the Manaquese would bite back at him, they would lock jaw.. A 6.5 inch fish has to have guts to lock jaw with a 11 big mouth mean Manaqese Cichlid...I took the manaqwese out befor any of em got hurt...the top of the Africans head was raw from the lock jawing.... The African has killed about 40-50 Blue gills, some being bigger and Blue gill are mean and will fight back... and killed all the other African left....A tought andf hardy fish, my manaquese is over 10 yrs old and still ticking... later * SPITFIRE v3.51 Surf To http://www.ivy.tec.in.us/haute/thaute.htm --- FreeMail 1.10 alpha-3 * Origin: Ivy Tech Online * 28.8 DS * FidoNet!
