But after seeing the prices you are paying I wonder is you have shopped around to see what the prices are. Here in my area Neon Tetras run about .89 each. As for the Neon being pregant you might want to concider a second tank for a breeder tank. 10gal will work fine. I have had success breed Zebra danios in this set up. Set it up with out any decorations of any kind. Use undergravel filter setup and a low air flow. Place the pairs in the tank for about one week. After one week with the lights in the room and tank turned off take a flashlight and backlight the tank. This will allow you to see any fry that might have hatched. If they have then immediately remove all adult fish from the tank as they will eat them. For fry food I found the if I took flaked food and mixed water with it in a small medicine bottle, thouroghly washed of course, shake vigoriously and put a few drops in to the tank, it work very well. It will take about 3 weeks before the fry are even large enough to placed back into the community tank. More likely it will take at least 6 weeks just to make sure. It sounds like your denitrifier is going totally anerobic. My first suggestion would be to increase the floe rate through it. With regard to the Berlin system, I am still trying to get a couple of questions answered: Is the chemical pathway for handling nitrogen different in the Berlin system than with a standard Wet Dry? That is, is the Nitrate production stage eliminated? Or is the overall pathway the same but just better balanced? That is, NH3->NO2->NO3->N2 + 3O2? If the chemical pathway is different, what is the pathway? If the chemical pathway is the same, don't you risk at least a temporary high level of NH3? Given a W/D system that also has a sufficient amount of live rock/sand, wouldn't this be equivalent? J. T. Hmmmm, actually I do believe that such a thing is in existence... Like I said before, almost all "humane" ways of killing a fish has two sides to it. If your not squeamish(and you have a small fish) you might opt to stun/kill the fish by slamming it against the way. Some people recommend placing the fish in some carbonated water(asphixiation?) And some would point out that it's only a fish and not a human being :) > One thing though, what if they are just put in a > refridgerator? Then they wouldn't freeze, but their > metabolism would still slow down... That sounds reasonable, then you would have a lethargic fish on your hands. Though sometimes the water in my goldfish "tank" gets as low as 60 degrees farenheit with no noticeable "slowing" effects. If biologists can make an anesthetic for fruit flies why not an anesthetic for fish? :) -bo --- * Origin: The Aquarium BBS - Fishies Unite! Let's see, I was gone for three days and I've lost two damsel's, a conch rolled over, a few oscars are laying in the fetal position and my once pristine white crushed coral 100gal saltwater is now a dirty brown diarrhea looking mess(a little bit exaggerated of course). :) Well, I finaly found a supplier of live sand and aragonite. What I'm wondering is: Do I have to dig up all the brown coral and bleach it before I place a layer of aragonite over it? Or can I just dump the aragonite over it and hope that the layer of brown will disappear? This brown stuff is even coating the sides of the tank. I'm only willing to buy chemicals to get rid of it as a last resort. Are there any other ways of eliminating the brown? I've reduced lighting to only aobut 4-5 hours a day. I've got 4 40watt fluorescents (48 inches) on it. I put one of my cowries from another tank into the 100gallon but it's a feeble attempt at best. Anybody with experience have an answer for me??? :) -bo --- * Origin: The Aquarium BBS - Fishies Unite! If there isn't enough CO2 in the tank, many plants have the ability to break apart the carbonates and/or bicarbonates to get the needed carbon. Check the carbonate hardness of your tap water and if there is a significant difference between your tap water and your tank water, you may want to consider CO2 fertalisation. __ \/ dj --- FMail 0.96 * Origin: The Otter Limits (GSN) (1:203/172) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 229 AQUARIUMS Ref: DC100007 Date: 07/31/96 From: DARREN HANSON Time: 08:14am \/To: CHRIS HOTTE (Read 3 times) Subj: KH+ > I would like to get the max available in my tank without having to > put in an expensive Co2 Kit. I've tried the sugar/yeast additive and > it didn't ever seem to have much of an effect on the Co2 content at > all. Well, my next suggestion would be to consider doing something along the lines of adding small amounts of baking soda to increase the bicarbonates. The problem is, as your tank seeks equilibrium, some of the (bi-)carbonates will be converted to CO2 and depending on surface agitation (if its enough to get O2 into the tank for the fish, it's enough to get the CO2 out!) be driven off before the plants can use it.. __ \/ dj --- FMail 0.96 * Origin: The Otter Limits (GSN) (1:203/172) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 229 AQUARIUMS Ref: DC100008 Date: 07/30/96 From: JACKIE HOLMES Time: 09:09pm \/To: DAVID AMBS (Read 3 times) Subj: Re: Big piranha -=> Quoting David Ambs to Jackie Holmes <=- DA> Yep, i am sure that it is a Pacu, and it is still alive..I have heard DA> from alot of people that Pacus's are vergatarians but with those teeth DA> that they got they cant be.... :) JH> JH> This is the first I've heard that Pacu's were vegetarians...I have JH> friends that have them and feed them feeder fish.
