Stanley, Jr.: JJ> What's everyone's recommendation for a hardy fish to cycle a new mini JJ> (10gal) saltwater tank. TB> thats a tropical / freshwater size tank!!!!!! No, a salt-water tank can be any size you want it to be. You just have to take certain considerations into account, such as not overstocking, and meticulously doing your upkeep. TB> So U wanna keep Live rock! Well you will also need to invest TB> in some /Proper/ Lighting ! Preferably Metal Halide ! as TB> nothing else provides the correct light spectrum... and TB> these babys are expensive!! TB> there are flourescent tubes that will do for Marine fish, TB> but if you are after keeeping live rock then you really do TB> /NEED/ to go for the metal halide! You need high spectrum lighting for corals and anemones, and certain other inverts, but not for live rock. Live rock is just rock that has various micro-organisms living in it, as well as some various algae and little critters. It does not require any special sort of lighting. JJ> I'm using a UGF with a power head, TB> Better suited to a dozen or so fresh water tropical really, JJ> a marineland penguin 110 bio wheel and a concurrent flow protein JJ> skimmer for filtration. TB> And its just NOT really good enough im afraid :( Again, I must differ. That is more than enough for a small saltwater tank. As a matter of fact, I am setting up a 23g with a biowheel and a small protein skimmer, and know many people who have only UGFs on theirs. The only thing you really have to do differently with saltwater, as compared to freshwater, is way less stocking, and feeding only every other day with minimal amounts. If you don't follow those two rules, that's when you start getting into problems. TB> like sorrry to be a bit of a killjoy, but I have TB> investigated this thouroughly and ALL the experts I have TB> spoken to in the UK said DONT DO IT !! Obviously, the "experts" in the UK seem to have very different opinions than the "experts" in Canada... Everything that this fellow wants to do is fine, although he does have a bit too much filtration IMHO. I hope this information is received with an open mind, and that you are willing to accept that there are several ways of doing things... :) --- timEd 1.01 * Origin: Traveller's Rest Point and Pet Factory (1:163/551.12) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 229 AQUARIUMS Ref: DBB00005 Date: 07/05/96 From: CHRISTINE LABONT Time: 07:50pm \/To: STEVE SIMONS (Read 2 times) Subj: Glassfish....? Once upon a time, in a land far, far away Steve Simons told All: SS> I was rummaging around in the local fish shop the other day SS> when I noticed a tank full of /glassfish./ I'd never seen SS> these before, and to be honest, apart from the thin streak SS> of fluorescent pink, orange or green colouring on their SS> back, they weren't particularly interesting. Curious though, SS> I did a bit of research and discovered that the streak of SS> colour is achieved by injecting the otherwise transparent SS> fish with a dye. SS> Two questions. SS> (1) How is this performed? SS> (2) Isn't this procedure at all frowned upon? These poor little fishies are injected with this dye. Some do not survive. Also, the dye wears off after a little while (ask Carol Burke about hers). As for your second question, yes, it is definately frowned upon, and no "informed" aquarist will touch them; unfortunately, they are often sold to first-time aquarists by shops that just want to make a buck. I'm lucky, I don't like fluorecent (day-glo) coloured stuff, so was never in the least inclined to purchase one, even in my beginning days. Maybe if you complained to the shop about them, they would stop carrying them, and eventualy no one will want them and they will stop this attrocious disfigurement. I need a little help with the Grammie tank. It was set up as a community tank but as the population thinned, I stocked it with Grammies. Apparently not too many fish can coexist with Grammies. Now I find they have a hard time getting along with themselves. Lost a couple over the last 6 months. I put it down to aggression. One Leopard Danyo has survived. 4 Cory cats are OK. (nobody bothers a cat.:) I would like to make it a community tank, if I can. Variety is nice. Any idea what fish get along with Grammies? BTW Feel free to correct my spelling. I know Danyo isn't spelled this way. ;-) Marty. --- OLXWin 1.00 All hope abandon, ye who enter messages here. --- QScan/PCB v1.17b / 01-0182 * Origin: Balmy Beach Toronto 416-690-9641 (1:250/422) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 229 AQUARIUMS Ref: DBB00011 Date: 07/06/96 From: JOHN K. Yes, the "Painted Glass Fish" is generally looked down upon by most aquarists that I know. I really don't think that the fish are injured very much by the procedure, but I honestly don't really want to see a fish that has been altered just for my viewing pleasure. I've heard that the same technique is used to track and mark fish in the wild for study. I don't think that is does any dammage to them from what I've read, but I have also read information that "Painted Glass Fish" don't live as long in aquariums as the non-painted variety. I suppose it's more of a personal choice. Do what you like and not what others tell you to do, or you won't enjoy your tank. :) --- CNet/3 * Origin: Excalibur BBS! - 970.506.0425 - Greeley, CO (1:315/17) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 229 AQUARIUMS Ref: DBC00001 Date: 07/06/96 From: CHUCK POLLET Time: 12:10am \/To: CHRISTINE LABONT (Read 2 times) Subj: Re: Testing It's getting through to Greeley Colorado!
