Right? Yes. But a little hard to do with most setups. TJ> JO> There is one very big drawback to the above method: The skimmer TJ> JO> has to be sized for the full flow rate of the trickle filter. TJ> JO> If the particulars of your tank size allow you to do this TJ> JO> easily, it is ideal. In my case, (when I had my skimmer TJ> JO> running) I had the trickle sized to turn over the volume of the TJ> JO> tank 4 times per hour while the skimmer only turned the volume TJ> JO> over once per hour (remember, this is a 200 Gal tank). So, for TJ> JO> this case, I placed a TEE with a control valve at the outlet of TJ> JO> the pump and another TEE with control calve at the inlet. I TJ> JO> used this as a branch line and ran it through the skimmer. TJ>Ok that would be a little more complex, but I think I follow there TJ>too. But *much* easier to plumb and maintain. TJ> TJ>Next obvious question is, What is an ozone generator and how do TJ> TJ>you build one. Also how does it fit in with the protein skimmer? TJ> TJ>Thanks again. Take care TJ>I knew most of that, but how do you make a ozone generator? Best just to buy one, they are not that expensive. The outlet of the air pump goes to the inlet of the generator and the outlet of the generator to the air stones. TJ>Also i TJ>say someone else taking about CO2 injection for your live TJ>plants. How does that work? I've never had to run a CO2 generator. Anyone else have a good description? My opinion is that most plants will do just fine given a balanced plant and fish load. Lighting is probably more essential. J. T. This isn't > DH>the normal positioning of tank and filter box, but it is possible. > Good point. This would also have the added advantage of being > failsafe in case of a power failure. Not really. You can rig the outlet from the aqurium to only drain down to a certain level preventing the accidental draining of the tank. Then with a properly sized wet/dry, all of the excess water can be held in the media chamber until the pump starts running again. With the wet/dry above the tank, all the water in the wet/dry will drain back into the tank in case of power failure which means you have to never completely fill the aquarium. Setting up the wet/dry correctly below the tank is easier to failsafe, but that doesn't mean their might not be a reason to do it the other way around. > Sounds workable, but I still don' think worth the trouble. I think it's Aquarium Pharmaceuticals then that has the automatic water changer out. It pumps 5 gallons/hour out of the tank while replacing that same amount of water that's forced through a venturi to strip out the chlorine and oxygenate the makeup water. And the whole thing runs off water presure so as long as the faucet works, you'll be changing 120 gallos a day and a slow/steady rate. Depening a stocking level, that would maintain a 50-100 gallon tank without need for chemical or biological filtration as the ammonioa and DOCs would be pumped out through the continuous water changes! VERY stable pH, hardness, etc as well as long as your water company doesn't play games, and even then the tank is automatically aclimated slowly over a day or so to the new water chemistry! > They had a pool filter complete with sump in the back and a giant > protein skimmer. The water gravity fed from each tank into a drain > system to the sump and was cycled back to the tanks via the protein > skimmer/pool filter. I thought this was great, but wondered what > would happen if they got a disease outbreak in one tank. It would be immediately pumped into all of the other tanks. Depending on how fast they caught it, they could, I'm sure, isolate the tank from the rest of the system during treatment. If they were running ozone in the skimmer and had an apropriately sized bank of UV lights in the system, they could go a long way toward PREVENTING an outbreak even if a diseased fish were introduced to one of the tanks.... __ \/ dj --- FMail 0.96 * Origin: The Otter Limits (GSN) (1:203/172) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 229 AQUARIUMS Ref: DAL00011 Date: 06/13/96 From: MICHAEL DAINES Time: 11:23pm \/To: ALL (Read 2 times) Subj: Another Reef Setup Question... Looking for comments about a new set-up I'm thinking about trying. First the background. I have a 20gal berlin tank with a 250w6500kMH 24" hood, and I'm moving, so I have an excuse to upgrade. I was thinking about a 60 gallon cube (24" each side) tank, since my hood will fit without modification. Since this is a deep tank, I could go Jaubert...1" plenum and about 4" total of Argonite and live sand, and the 50+# of live rock I've already got, just moving my skimmer and small power filter for periodic carbon use. For water flow I was going to use a Hagen 802 hooked up to a spray bar, placing the spray bar in the back at the bottom, on top of the sand to blow any grunge to the front for easy removal. A couple of other powerheads for additional circulation and a heater would complete the set-up. No fish initially, just some polyps, coral, and rock...a few hermits and brittle stars in the top layer of the sand. What do you think. The Bible calls this,"sin". Romans 3:23 says,"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Yet God loves you and wants to save you from sin,to offer you a new life of hope. John 10:10 says, "I have come that you may have life, and have it to the full." To give you this gift of salvation,God made a way through his son,Jesus Christ. Romans 5:8 says,"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." You recieve this gift by faith alone. Ephesians 2:8 says,"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works , so that no one can boast." Faith is a decision of your heart demonstrated by the actions of your life. Romans 10:9 says,"If you confess with your mouth,'Jesus is Lord',and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." If you are choosing right now to believe Jesus died for your sins and to recieve new life through Him, pray a prayer similar to this to thank Him for your new life: Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died to forgive me of my sins. I now accept Your offer of eternal life. Thank You for forgiving me of all my sin. Thank You for my new life. From this day forward, I will choose to follow you. If this expresses the desire of your heart , or if you have ANY questions...write me via Fido or E-mail (upper@atl.mindspring.com) and I will attempt to answer any questions.....if I can't I promise to put you in touch with those who can!!
